Submission + - Push Gmail for iPhone and Windows Mobile (blogspot.com) 1

Selikoff writes: "Google has expanded service to now include push Gmail for iPhone and Windows Mobile, previously only supporting limited Exchange services such as Calendar. It seems Google didn't work directly with Apple on this subject, instead choosing to leverage the existing Exchange protocol previously available within the iPhone. From the article "Google rolled out an upgrade to Google Sync which now provides the ability for Gmail messages to be pushed to mobile devices rather than pulled. That means that e-mail messages sent to Gmail accounts will be received immediately on mobile devices rather than having to be summoned at 15 or 30 minute intervals by the device.""

Submission + - SPAM: Court to scammer: Give up your house or go to jail 1

coondoggie writes: "Too many online scammers get away with what amounts to a wrist slap but a case if Las Vegas this week seems to be heading the right direction at least.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, a business opportunity scammer has been held in contempt for the second time by a federal court and ordered to turn over the title of his home in Las Vegas or face jail time.

The court found that the operator of the scam, Richard Neiswonger, failed to deliver marketable title to his home, in violation of a previous court order entering a $3.2 million judgment against him, the FTC stated. The FTC charged that the defendant deceived consumers with false promises that they could make a six-figure income by selling his "asset protection services" to those seeking to hide their assets from potential lawsuits or creditors.

This new service enables advertisers and content publishers to promote, measure and monetize applications across social networks, desktops and mobile devices. Submission + - Time Warner to lose MTV, Comedy Central, and More (google.com) 1

Selikoff writes: "Viacom has started flooding airwaves (in the form of a scrolling banner on certain channels) announcing Time Warner customers will lose a number of channels at midnight tonight including: Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Noggin, Nicktoons, Spike, VH1, TV Land, and more. The banner encourages customers to call Time Warner to complain and even provides a support number. Apparently, the issue stems from Viacom raising rates as much as 22 and 36 percent per channel. Funny, they didn't post a customer support number to call Viacom in the scrolling banner, but according to their website its (212) 258-6000. Read more about it at: here and here."

Submission + - Voyager 2 finds solar system's shape is 'dented' (reuters.com)

Selikoff writes: "NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft has found that our solar system is not round but is "dented" by the local interstellar magnetic field of deep space, space experts said on Monday. The data was gathered by the craft on its 30-year journey into the edge of the solar system when it crossed into a sweeping region called the termination shock, they said. It showed that the southern hemisphere of the solar system's heliosphere is being pushed in or "dented." Voyager 2 is the second spacecraft to enter this region of the solar system behind Voyager 1, which entered the northern region of the heliosheath in December 2004."

Submission + - Google Maps offers Faux GPS for Cell Phones (google.com)

Selikoff writes: "One of the most exciting new features of the BlackBerry 8800 is that it sports a GPS tracking which integrates with Google Maps so you always know where you are when plotting directions. When a friend of mine demonstrated this feature, it goes without saying I was a little jealous. That was until I discovered Google has expanded the My Location program to include GPS-like support for non-GPS phones. From Google's website: "The My Location feature takes information broadcast from mobile towers near you to approximate your current location on the map — it's not GPS, but it comes pretty close (approximately 1000m close, on average). We're still in beta, but we're excited to launch this feature and are constantly working to improve our coverage and accuracy." I tried it out myself and it had me within 2 blocks of my current location. Pretty impressive considering its triangulating your position with equipment not designed to do that."

Submission + - TiVo Revives Product Lifetime Service (sort of) (tivo.com)

Selikoff writes: "In what has to be one of the more complicated methods of reviving Product Lifetime Service, TiVo has announced it will be offering lifetime gift cards for existing members with the purchase of a new TiVo HD and network adapter for $698.99. What does this mean to you? Well, if you want it for yourself and don't have TiVo, you're stuck buying two units (the first to become an existing member) or convincing a friend with TiVo to order it for you. If you all ready have TiVo HD or Series 3, then you're paying for a box you don't need, although you can always put it on eBay.

Product lifetime used to be available for any TiVo DVR but was discontinued almost two years ago. This marks the second time TiVo has offered lifetime service since then, although the first was just as complicated, with the restriction being you had to transfer lifetime from an older Series 1 or Series 2 DVR with lifetime, to a new Series 3 DVR."

Submission + - Apple Confirms MacBook Hard Drive Failures (informationweek.com)

Scott Selikoff writes: "Information Week is reporting a hard drive sold with Apple MacBooks has a critical manufacturing flaw that often results in the permanent loss of data. Seagate was not immediately available for comment, but Apple spokesman Cameron Craig said the company was aware that there might be a problem. "We've received a few reports that some MacBook consumer notebooks may have hard drive issues, and we're looking into it," he said.

Speaking as someone who went to through 3 hard drives on a 4 month old MacBook before Apple replaced the entire computer, its a slight relief to know that it's not just me. If you have a MacBook, make sure you back up weekly, or in my case with what I went through, hourly."

Submission + - Some Best Buys not honoring Mario Galaxy Promotion

Selikoff writes: "As many of you may have heard Toys R Us began giving away $25 gift cards this week with every purchase of Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. Not to be outdone, Best Buy announced it would match the offer with its own $25 gift certificates. There's been some noise in forums that some Best Buy stores are failing to honor this promotion. I decided to go to Best Buy, with SKU number in hand (although it shouldn't be needed), only to experience the same problems at my local store. Clerks refused to acknowledge or even type in the coupon, and only after fighting a manager for 10 minutes did he try the SKU number out, only to discover it was a real promotion. I don't know if I should chalk this one up to bad customer service or failure in the chain of command to notify store associates, but I'm sure there are a lot of Best Buy customers who failed to get their certificate this week."

Submission + - TiVo Series 3 Finally Adds Missing Features (tivo.com)

Selikoff writes: "When the TiVo Series 3 launched, new owners were shocked to learn that many of the features of the box were locked or disabled. Well, it should come as a welcome change that a year later, these features have finally been activated. In the latest service update, TiVo Series 3 boxes now support external storage devices using the eSata port as well as TiVoToGo software that allows downloading of programs to a Windows computer (mac version is still limited). TivoToGo had been available in Series 2 boxes but was immediately disabled in Series 3 do to licensing issues with HD content.

It's nice to see previously available features finally unlocked in Series 3 boxes, it's too bad it took a full year for the update. It's also worth noting TiVo sells a proprietary version of TivoToGo which allows you to convert the downloaded content into a more usable format (rather than a Tivo DRM-locked file) for transfer to a variety of devices such as Sony PSP, Palm Treo, Creative Zen, and Apple iPod."

Submission + - How much money to get on a Presidential Ballot? (selikoffsolutions.com)

Scott writes: Stephan Colbert's recent ephemeral run for President reminded me that not every US citizen can run for President. Aside from needing to amass huge sums of money and support for the campaign trail, it also requires great deal of money just to register for the primary ballot in each state. As Colbert discovered, he would have had to shell out $35,000 just to get his name on the Republican ballot in South Carolina.

This got me thinking, how much money does it take to register for the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries in each state?

With that idea in mind I have begun compiling a list using what secret bits of party information I can amass. I welcome you all to review it and send me updates. I've searched through some preliminary lists, but I really need the help of a much larger community like Slashdot to finish it!

Submission + - China's Olympic ticketing system crashes on first (macworld.com) 1

ApolloX writes: Macworld is reporting that China's new high tech system crashed the first day on the job. From the article:

"BOCOG's ticketing site received 8 million page views during the first hour of ticket sales Oct. 30, with an average of 200,000 ticket requests hitting the system every minute, BOCOG said in a statement. In addition, more than 3.8 million telephone calls flooded the sales hotline as fans tried to book tickets for the games. "Because of the overwhelming volume of page visits, the technical system was unable to perform the tasks well enough, and many applicants were unable to successfully submit their applications," BOCOG said."
