Anything they can do to weaken the US internally will also weaken us on a global level.

They will continue to hack and spread disinformation about Biden in order to try and get Trump elected since that is the best way to further the continued downfall of the United States of America.

Unfortunately a large segment of the US populace already believes the garbage spewing forth from the far-right.

Hopefully there are enough folks in this country paying attention to keep us a free nation and relegate Trump to where he belongs: a footnote in history as the only US president to commit sedition and try to overthrow the elected government.

And a degree has never guaranteed a high paying job.
All a college degree has ever done is:
a) open some doors that would otherwise be closed
b) increase probable pay potential after a period of time (typically 8-10 years after graduation)

These things are often still true though possibly less than they used to be in some fields.

The main driver of the "need" for a college education is the desire to not do manual labor or even skilled trades in the US and a contributing factor is that the US economy is no longer based on production but instead the movement of money(value) from one virtual account to another.

A skilled tradesman can get work after vocational high school or a two year vocational program and have a head start on the college students.
Initial earnings will often be greater than the college grads for a number of years but tends to slow down and cap earlier and lower than the degree holders.

All that said, some college grads do walk into high pay right out of college and some college dropouts make it rich.
Some high school dropouts make it rich.

But here is a fact for you: the trades are more secure employment, as long as you are willing to WORK and can meet basic competency levels.

If you don't want to work or are not competent - just go get an MBA.

Google started out providing users a service they wanted:
Fast, accurate search results without a lot of garbage
- Since then they have "improved" Google search to the point of being comparable to Bing - ie.: not very good

Fast, easy to use webmail
-since then they have improved it to the point of being crappy but usable on a computer but basically irrelevant on a cellphone screen. Outlook Mobile is better than the Gmail app.

Google Maps was something of a revelation when introduced
- since then they have filled it with so much garbage and now a horrible UI color scheme that it is next to unusable.

Google seems to be on a path to self destruction.

There will be others who pick up the slack as Google fails.

There are much better and more viable (as well as better looking) electric pickup trucks in the market.

Clarification:
Linux is a kernel, not an OS.
For this topic I will pretend that everyone reading is aware of this.

As for having a single "official" distribution - that is just crazy talk.
Linux can be:
- a headless server for web, databases, virtual machines or other enterprise level purposes (too many to list, really and they do NOT all need the same core software)
- a desktop oriented to productivity applications
- a desktop oriented to gaming applications
- a phone OS oriented towards modern smart phone use
- and more.

Note that the above is just a small portion of the current uses for distributions using a Linux kernel and these can have widely divergent needs and specializations.

While it is generally possible to make any linux distribution do anything any other distribution can do - why would you go through the hassles??
That would be like using Windows 11 as an enterprise database server - might be possible but it sure would be silly, just like it would be to use Server 2019 Datacenter as the operating system on an ultralight notebook.

Use the proper tools for the job.
Some distributions do a very good job making an easy desktop for novice users.
Others are great for handling millions of transactions for enterprise use on a 10G network.

Linux distributions have a great strength in their ability to be customized for specific use cases and this includes KEEPING the operating system customizable for power users when desired.

This is something that all current versions of Windows and Apple operating systems have lost.
IF your environment and workflow fits cleanly within Apple's or Microsoft's methods and procedures they CAN be a good choice.
But don't you dare deviate - your environment will eventually break.

As for hardware and software compatibility - I have read the old trope about "linux having bad hardware support" for years and it has never been accurate.
If you are having this problem you are doing it wrong.

Getting more hybrids (lower price and less unobtainium needed for batteries) and fewer electric vehicles (higher price, more rare metals need plus difficulty of battery recycling) on the road more could easily be done to minimize the man-made causes of the warming climate changes.

Plus - compressed hydrogen is a great alternative that just needs some infrastructure investment to be viable.

Submission + - RATM Refuses To Play Venues That Use Facial Recognition (futurism.com)

SonicSpike writes: Rock band "Rage Against the Machine" is living up to its name by signing a pledge to boycott venues that use facial recognition technology.

Band cofounders Tom Morello and Zack De La Rocha are, as Rolling Stone reports, among the many signatories of a pledge from the nonprofit Fight for the Future, which seeks, among other things, to get Congress to pass a bill banning facial recognition tech.

"In recent years, a coalition of musicians, fans, and human rights groups successfully got more than 40 of the world’s largest music festivals, including Bonnaroo and Coachella, to say they won’t use facial recognition at events," the pledge reads. "But now this tech is starting to spread — not only as a surveillance tool, but also as a form of 'paperless' ticketing and payment."

Indeed, Rolling Stone revealed last year that New York City's iconic Madison Square Garden arena was caught using the technology to surveil "adversaries" of the venue and remove them — yet another dystopian example of the tech, which has also been used to track the movements of public housing residents and by law enforcement.

"This invasive biometric surveillance isn’t safe," the Fight for the Future pledge continues, "especially for Black and brown people who have been falsely arrested or ejected from public places due to the tech’s baked-in discrimination."

Along with Rage Against the Machine, bands like Anti-Flag, Wheatus, Speedy Ortiz, and more than 100 others have signed the pledge, as well as a wide variety of music venues.

Thus far, the non-profit's track record with anti-biometric campaigning has been pretty successful. Last year, it successfully got Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheater to abandon plans to use Amazon's palm scanning software after Morello and Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna signed another pledge in protest of it.

That artists, venues, and even some elected officials are pushing back against this scary tech is definitely a good thing — but given that big names like Taylor Swift are using it regardless, and that Congress still hasn't passed legislation against the practice, it's only a small step in the right direction.

Submission + - France Unveils Plan To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 50 Percent By 2030 (france24.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The French government unveiled a plan on Monday to accelerate cuts to its greenhouse gas emissions, targeting a reduction of 50 percent by 2030 compared with 1990 levels. Unveiled by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, the roadmap includes detailed figures for reductions for individual sectors of the economy, ranging from the transport industry to households. The objectives – from speeding up the transition to electric cars or switching freight from road to rivers – are aimed at bringing France’s ambitions for slashing carbon pollution into line with the EU's target for 2030.

France has so far cut its emissions by 25 percent compared with 1990 levels, requiring major fresh efforts if it is to hit the new 50-percent target. "We're asking for a bit from the smallest (polluters) and a lot from the biggest," an aide to Borne told reporters, meaning around half of efforts would be for companies, a quarter for households and a quarter for local administrations.
