Comment Misleading Headline? On Slashdot?? (Score 0) 242

For who is OUTRAGED that they would take away the ability to shuffle albums- THEY DIDN'T. They didn't remove shit, the only difference is it defaults to playing the album in order. The shuffle button is right there on the player where it always is. Source: I'm using it right now.

It's embarrassing how easy it is on the internet to stir up a bunch of outrage over shit that didn't even happen. Honestly, I shouldn't even blame slashdot, it's the BBC that made the headline, but wouldn't it be nice if the editors actually checked these things?

Comment SomethingAwful fiction (Score 1) 165

Everyone thinks about the forums, since that's what spawned 4chan et al., but does anyone remember the writing? For a while SomethingAwful had some of the best short form fiction going, along with great bits of humor writing. It's a shame it doesn' seem like that style has any place on the internet anymore, everything now is tweet-size.

Comment Re:It was always a dumb idea (Score 1) 108

Don't you realize why they are more than happy to deliver you a single tube of toothpaste? Charging shipping and making you bundle your orders makes you stop and think about what you're buying rather than just pressing the "BUY" button. The money they lose on shipping is offset by the money they make from encouraging reflexive spending.

Comment Who and why? (Score 1) 44

Everyone is saying this is no longer a story, but frankly I think this makes the story more interesting, who stands to benefit from impersonating reddit and getting this service shut down? I could easily see this being a ruse by one of the big copyright holders worried that this will be used for "piracy". It's not like they haven't used dirty tricks in the past. As an alternative, maybe someone was hoping to impersonate SaveVideo after they shut them down and spread malware/shitty ads.

Comment Sleeping on "Sleepy" (Score 5, Insightful) 64

I really think people are sleeping on Biden as president, maybe because he's old and doesn't seem that dynamic, but I feel like so I've seen actual concrete policy direction and leadership coming out of his office at a faster pace than maybe any other administration in my lifetime.

Comment Moving Goalposts (Score 1) 232

I remember when the American Lung Association et al. were concerned about smoking because it was damaging to people's lungs. Now they seem to not really care about that but are on a moralistic anti-drug crusade. Addiction is the real enemy, lung cancer gets a pass I suppose.

As a non-smoker, I'm unimpressed that this has seemingly turned from a push for public health to a push for public morality. I'm not doubting nicotine is addictive, a quality it shares with alcohol, caffeine, gambling, and a host of other things-many of which have significant social costs. The question should be does that addiction result in adverse health effects? If the answer is yes, then show the research. (popcorn lung from knockoff THC juice is not really an indictment against e-cigs and isn't germane to the topic.) If the answer is no, then what are the ALA and ACS actually doing here except trying to raise up the flag of prohibition yet again?

Comment Re:Neutron Jack (Score 1) 289

You are reacting to this like it's an unprecedented new policy that Amazon just thought up. I can assure you it is not. Most of the objections people are raising were found in previous examples like Motorola, IBM add Microsoft. I remember when stack ranking was causing literally the problems discussed at Microsoft in the 2000s, and they have since ended the practice. Abandoning it has certainly not hurt their stock price.

Comment Anyone have more details (Score 2) 157

Does anyone know the extent of the damage beyond "They got hacked"? Are they having to rebuild their SCADA system from the ground up? Or did they not actually have any way of reaching their various remote PLCs without just hooking them up to the internet, and now they're trying to figure out some other way?
