Comment We've noticed this in an MRI setting (Score 5, Interesting) 207

About 2-3 years ago, our MRI tech of 20 years started noticing many more young women coming in with breast cancer. Much younger than normal, and more frequent than normal, and more advanced stages. It was anecdotal, but enough for her to notice the difference.

I was thinking COVID. Either covid was acting as a viral trigger for cancer, or people delayed routine screenings during covid until it was more significant.

Comment I'd be happy to upgrade, but my CPU isn't supporte (Score 1) 287

That's basically the issue. I actually prefer Windows 11's interface. It's more consistent than Windows 10. But I have a workstation with a pair of Xeon's that are not compatible with Windows 11. It's a fine workstation otherwise. The workstation works fine and there's no other reason to upgrade it, so I'll be stuck with Windows 10 for now.

Comment Acre of trees (Score 2) 175

I'm being sarcastic...but, you know what else captures as much CO2 as an acre of trees? An acre of trees.

And an acre of trees doesn't require energy for the plastics, transportation, and manufacturing to build a carbon sequestration device. Plants, trees, bushes, shrubs, all do a pretty good job capturing carbon... simply by being alive. They also do a great job keeping their environment cool by evaporating water during the process.

Maybe if the US doesn't have enough capacity, Apple could take some of the billions of dollars in cash, and ... invest it in US factories? I'm pretty sure if they invested that money in the US, then they'd be employing more US workers, who could... afford to buy an Apple device. I know it's cliche to suggest that investing in your home country actually benefits the country and your own company, but it's true.

Comment Happened to me (Score 1) 219

This happened to me with facebook when I had just started dating someone. We had been going out about a week, and she said that facebook kept recommending my profile to her, even though we had no friends in common, etc. The only connection I could see was that she was using the same phone to text me and access facebook. I thought maybe facebook accessed her contacts on her phone, saw a new contact that matched the phone number I have stored with facebook, and suggested me to her.

Of course she turned out to be rather stalker-ish, so maybe this didn't happen and she simply used her stalking abilities to find me on facebook.

Comment Re:User Interface concerns (Score 1) 177

I completely agree with this. The concept of having a single function in the car (wipers) but two different places to control the function is distracting and not intuitive. You would not expect to have a switch for headlights on the dashboard but have the parking lights/high beam controls on a touch panel. It simply takes too much time away from what you are supposed to be doing, which is watching the road and driving.

I recently got a minivan with a touchscreen to control the radio. While it's cute, its actually really difficult to use. 1) I don't know what I'm pressing on the screen, or what menu has come up, unless I take my eyes off the road to look at it. 2) This is the worse part. It takes a long time for screens to change and the buttons to do their job, like half a second. That's a long time, and that means I'm potentially ignoring the road for half a second. Unless the passenger is controlling the radio or I'm parked, the touchscreen serves no purpose.

From a UI perspective, nested menus are not good for doing things quickly. But, maybe Tesla is pushing everything into the touchscreen because they anticipate not worrying about distracted driving as their self-driving cars take off. Maybe that's the point.
