Comment why aren't we seeing the evidence of ET AI? (Score 1) 315

sure... say skynet wipes us all out. now it's in charge and free to colonize the stars as IT pleases. so how come we're not seeing evidence of THAT?

besides, this is a very old idea - of ai being the great filter - so it's a wonder why its getting any traction now. geez, we really are toddlers attracted by shiny things.

Comment y not just sink "reactors"? (Score 1) 193

everyone's talking about using water to flush into drill holes but why not just drill deep enough until it's hot enough and then drop in self-contained, closed loop, hot water "reactors" that can just sit down there and send up electricity? then you don't care anything about the nature of the hole or the space after you've drilled. you only care about heat. not to mention that it would be super clean to do it this way.

horse shit. at least based on what "liberal" has come to mean in the current zeitgeist... which is quite illiberal. they can't even define what a woman is. nor can they be the least bit coherent about why trans-sex is great but trans-race is verboten. nor, for a folk that claim to be "on the side of science", acknowledge basic fundamental aspects of reality like the real genetic differences between the sexes.

and they seem to be completely oblivious of their own hypocrisies when they claim liberality and then go on to explain why it's a good thing that people should not be able to express themselves when it disagrees with their own ideology. or when they abhor when the actions of individuals are used to characterize an entire group of people but then go on to do exactly that when they talk about "institutional racism" in everything from cops to schools to media. the "liberal" left has become a gigantic enterprise of double standards just dressed up in different, made up words and terms.

it used to be that the religious right sought to dictate moral and sexual norms to EVERYONE. and no one was allowed to have a difference of opinion here without being condemned as a deviant.

what's different now? it's just the queer side dictating moral and sexual norms to EVERYONE. and no one is allowed to have a difference of opinion here without being condemned as a homophobe.

if reality has a liberal bias, then no dominant political faction can claim to be liberal in today's zeitgeist.

convenient how everything useful is speculative but was settled fact when it was used to scaremonger.

and you're taking things too literally:

1. you don't have to use nukes. the principle of throwing up material into the high stratosphere to block sunlight is no speculative. even volcanoes do it.
2. load up every heavy bomber in the world and start a nonstop mission of aerosolizing some agreed upon particulate WILL cool the planet.
3. the effect of any particular mission may be short term but we can, if necessary, carry on INDEFINITELY.

the only thing stopping us is that we think we have other options. when we've run out of options, we won't just sit around and broil. we'll start doing what needs to be done.

terraforming starts at home.
