Rental services for home appliances are plentyful in South Korea. Friges, laundry machines, dish washers, A/C, TVs, and air cleaners can be rented for a monthly subscription. I rent a water dispenser. You have to commit to a 3-year contract. There are some benefits such as a service person stopping by every three months to clean filters and perform maintenance. After three years, you can (1) return the device or (2) commit to a new contract for the newest model. It's a wet dream for all hardware manufacturers. At the moment, most people still buy their home appliances, but I am quite sure that rentals will soon become the norm. All manufacturers have to do is raise the prices of selling the unit (which is easy since South Korea doesn't really have an open market due to high Import taxes).
