Comment WoW player, and loving it (Score 1) 413

As a player that as been there since the days of Vanilla and playing almost non-stop in a semi-casual guild (and now as Guild Leader) I feel blizzard have been testing the waters for quite a while and have finally got it right. They have been experimenting with different ways of balancing PvP and PvE, as well as the difficulties of Raids and at which level they should be aimed at. In WotLK Naxx and TotC were complete and utter failures while Ulduar and ICC is rated as some of the best content to brace WoW since Vanilla. Come Cataclym, expectations where high, and though the first 3 Raid Dungeons were okay, they weren't great (besides Nef).. Because of peoples experience of WotlK (which I think was blizzards worst so far) people had already stopped playing and then when Firelands came out they didn't even bother levelling up to 85 ( http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/2413-Character-Activity-Stats-Poll-Trip-to-Blizzcon-Contest-MMO-Report ) But for those of us who have stuck it out, have finally been rewarded with Firelands... In my humble opinion, Blizzard has gotten Firelands 100% correct. It is hard, fun and epic. Firelands is about bringing the player, not the class It is about movement and tactics, not just standing still and smashing buttons.. Yes.. this has made organising raid nights harder as you can no longer carry players, but once you have weeded out those who are just not up to it.. It is definitely worth it.. The problem Blizzard are facing now is that because Firelands is so awesome, and hard casual players just aren't buying into it anymore, and so they are starting to pull the plug on subscriptions which looks bad, but it is probably the best thing that can happen.. This way blizzard won't have to cater for the n00bs who can't even play arcane mage :( I for once is finally enjoying WoW again (as I did back in Vanilla and TBC) and I can definitely recommend Firelands to any WoW player who has ended their subscription and has been thinking of trying it out again.

But in say 200years from now it might only take 50years? or even less.

So while impregnating might but a bit of problem right now.. The case of "I got here first" vs "I was sent first" might be a bigger problem!

South Africa, which has one of the more "advanced" telecommunication networks in Africa has less than 10% of its population on Internet, and most of those are dial-ups. The rest of Africa is so far in the dark that the countries finally embracing the world of Internet are bypassing fixed lines and going straight for cellphones.. I can hardly see them jumping on this idea soon.. Long story short : Permanent internet requirement == no 3rd World users

You can compare gaming to the movie and TV industry. Games designed with no end in sight are like TV shows whose life is controlled by the interest of the public, where other games with definite endings could be compared to movies. Sure TV shows do give you that feeling of really getting to grips with the characters and the story, and lore.. But who turns down a great Movie for that dose of fast paced intense action? If gaming with set endings ever came to an end, it would truly be a horrible state of affairs for the gaming world. IMHO that feeling of "clocking" a game should never vanish.

Blizzard did in fact try to take some measures a couple of years ago regarding South Africa and our fleet of Private Servers. Because of the high volume of "private servers" in SA (hosting all of Blizzards games [starcraft, d1,d2,War3, and WoW]) Blizzard threatened not to ship WoW - The Burning Crusade to South Africa. This fell through as the game was oddly enough available in Zimbabwe, and so suppliers were just importing the game. This being said, one of the main reasons PS exist in SA is because our pings to Blizzard servers(and everywhere else in the world) usually vary between 600-1200ms. It can be lowered to 350, but this requires a purchase of an unshaped account (which sells for over R125 per gig). So instead, SA gamers choose to rather enjoy a lag free game, rather than a full feature game. And with local bandwidth costing almost 10% of our "blended" bandwidth some players are almost forced into using PS. I'm not saying that this is a valid excuse to host PS, but sometimes when you are forced into a corner, you just have to make do with what you have.
