If I didn't care about getting fired, I'd sue them in small claims court.
The email was sent by the company stating they would get a bonus with no caveats or disclosures. That's a financial commitment. It does not matter one iota that it was sent from a different domain. Emails for company-related business, such as third-party benefits providers, come from alternate domains all the time.

There's immense cultural momentum in having crewed combat aircraft. Pilots are Officers, and combat aircraft assignments, particularly fighters, are highly respected and admired. Most senior officers in the Air Force were combat pilots.

Another way of looking at it - being a combat pilot is exciting, glorious, and gets you laid, and all that is worth the risk of death.

Another big reason is smart phones made them a critical mass of "new" and "new" = better. Touch screens were the best solution for every UI design situation.

Just as, in prior years, push buttons into microcontrollers were new, and really helpful in a few situations, and therefore had to replace everything including that to which they were not suited, such as volume controls.
