Well, technically these kind of applications don't violate the TOS because all they do is display google maps in a server window and then they take the locally cached tiles.

There's also an iPhone app for jailbroken devices which uses cached google maps tiles for offline use with the normal maps application. It's really quite handy but not the most practical method (it requires desktop software to download the tiles and to create a database which must then be uploaded through ssh to the iPhone)

How Video Games Reflect Ideology 244

A recent article at Bitmob sought to tackle the question of whether games could carry political meaning, arguing the negative since "The money, the media representation, and the general shadow of 'triviality' will always trail the word 'game,' because that is what makes it open to all markets." An opposing viewpoint has been posted by Lee Bradley, who says, "Perhaps the most profound shift in the games industry in the last few years has been the explosion of co-op. Not only are developers dedicating more and more time to providing co-op experiences in their games, they are also finding new ways of exploring the dynamic within it. ... Even in games where the co-operative element of co-op is less pronounced, the ideology is the same; you are not on your own anymore, you are part of a team. What's more, that team is more than likely multi-cultural and/or multi-gender. ... Now, this isn't to say that the lone white-guy hero has been eradicated. Far from it; the bald, white space-marine is one of the most over-used characters in modern gaming. But it increasingly rare that they are lone heroes. A shift towards team-based, co-op featured games is undeniable. In this way, mainstream video games, even those seemingly void of political statement, are implicitly political. While for the most part they are not designed to tackle political issues head-on, or carry overt political messages, they do reflect the values and the popular ideology of the culture in which they were created."

Yeah, but you could as well recommend pure unadulterated GWT

Once you're familiar with the concepts and philosophy of GWT, you'll be able to decide if you want to use a framework that builds upon it (there are tons of them and some are really crappy, like ext-gwt)

I'm a frequent contributor in the user forums and I find that GWT beginners only get more confused when they try to use a framework on top of GWT without knowing the basics.

Submission + - Genetic Mutation Enables Less Sleep (nytimes.com) 1

reporter writes: "According to an article by the "New York Times", "Researchers have found a genetic mutation in two people who need far less sleep than average, a discovery that might open the door to understanding human sleep patterns and lead to treatments for insomnia and other sleep disorders.

The finding, published in the Friday issue of the journal Science, marks the first time scientists have identified a genetic mutation that relates to sleep duration in any animal or human.

... [People possessing the mutated gene] routinely function on about 6 hours of sleep a night; the average person needs 8 to 8.5 hours of sleep.
"

Does 2 less hours of sleep mean 2 more hours in writing comments on SlashDot?"

I know of several dells (m1330 and m1550) that couldn't stay connected to wifi no matter what we did. They were on vista.
We tested ubuntu on them and the wifi worked flawlessly, but the owners were reluctant to switch. We then tested windows 7 and wireless problems went away (along with most of the vista crappiness) so they're now on windows 7.
I just hope for them the upgrade price isn't too steep.

Does someone have a good idea how this all relates money wise?

A couple of months ago there was this article at arstechnica stating that the biggest chunk of ISP expenses were used to get content (tv channels) from the "content industry".

Now I'm not saying this is true for ALL ISPs, but as almost every ISP that I know of is offering the so-called triple-play, I'd think that what is revealed in the article still applies to a vast majority of them.
