Submission + - GeForce GTX 480 BIOS Update and Cooks an Egg (legitreviews.com)

demitri writes: Hardware review website Legit Reviews has taken the heat issue of the newly released NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 Fermi DX11 video card and put a positive spin on it! They slapped a piece of tin foil and tried to cook an egg on the heatsink of the GTX 480! I don't want to completely spoil the fun, but this was prompted after a BIOS update on the card failed to fix the dual monitor heat issue LR discovered! They even had some forum members create their own George Foreman Grill spoofs featuring NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang! Check it out!

Submission + - Long Time NVIDIA Partner XFX Skipping Fermi (legitreviews.com)

demitri writes: Legit Reviews has received word from XFX that they are not going to be releasing any GeForce 400 series graphics cards due to the numerous flaws of the Fermi architecture. Instead XFX has also just leaked information and images of their upcoming ATI Radeon HD 5970 dual-gpu card with higher clock speeds and 4GB of on-board memory. So instead of spending time on NVIDIA's oven, they are skipping it to release an ATI card that will out perform the GF100 cards!

Submission + - OnLive Gaming Service Gets Lukewarm Approval (pcper.com)

Vigile writes: When the OnLive cloud-based gaming service was first announced back in March of 2009, it was met with equal parts excitement and controversy. While the idea of playing games on just about any kind of hardware thanks to remote rendering and streaming video was interesting, the larger issue remained of how OnLive planned to solve the latency problem. With the closed beta currently underway, PC Perspective put the OnLive gaming service to the test by comparing the user experiences of the OnLive-based games to the experiences with the same locally installed titles. The end result appears to be that while slower input-dependent games like Burnout: Paradise worked pretty well, games that require a fast twitch-based input scheme like UT3 did not.

Netflix Coming To Sony PS3 145

itwbennett writes "'Microsoft has always seemed rather enthusiastic when it comes to throwing around the word 'exclusive,' and here is another case in point,' says blogger Peter Smith. Netflix and Sony have announced that Netflix streaming is coming to the Sony PlayStation 3 as early as next month. Back in August, when Microsoft was rolling out its new dashboard update, one of the features it was talking up was Netflix streaming, says Smith, and it said, 'This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360. Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience...' Apparently, in Microsoft parlance, 'exclusive partnership' means 'we launched it first' and not 'we inked a deal with Netflix preventing this feature from appearing on the competition's hardware.' All this is good news for PS3 owners who can now sign up to be notified of Netflix availability for their system."

Microsoft Opening Outlook's PST Format 319

protosage writes to tell us that Microsoft Interoperability is working towards opening up Outlook's .pst format under their Open Specification Promise. This should "allow anyone to implement the .pst file format on any platform and in any tool, without concerns about patents, and without the need to contact Microsoft in any way." "In order to facilitate interoperability and enable customers and vendors to access the data in .pst files on a variety of platforms, we will be releasing documentation for the .pst file format. This will allow developers to read, create, and interoperate with the data in .pst files in server and client scenarios using the programming language and platform of their choice. The technical documentation will detail how the data is stored, along with guidance for accessing that data from other software applications. It also will highlight the structure of the .pst file, provide details like how to navigate the folder hierarchy, and explain how to access the individual data objects and properties."
