Virtual REX Description

An electromagnetic sensor includes a "front end" that generates and receives electromagnetic waves through a subsystem called a Receiver/EXciter. A "back-end", which performs signal and data processing, is usually implemented in software, is also included. Each subsystem must be designed and developed separately before being integrated together. Integration testing presents problems that can slow down and complicate the development of the overall sensor. This is due to the interdependencies between these subsystems, which cannot be tested during development. Software patches, configuration upgrades and waveform changes become significantly more costly as they cannot be verified at the operational site. These issues can be addressed by the Virtual Receiver/EXciter, (VREX). It uses a simulated front end.
