Sawmills that cut a wide variety of products to order, as is the case with most sawmills in North America, are responsible for getting the right product to the correct customer in a timely fashion. It is not easy to determine which logs should be processed and with what sawing patterns. It is difficult to make the best operating decisions using conventional planning methods. The SAWSIM®,-LP linear programming optimization system was created to aid sawmill operations in determining "sawing pattern recipe" - the optimal mix of sawing patterns that convert a given input log mix into a specific production mix. The system can be used to help with short-term production planning decisions as well as to evaluate long-term marketing and log procurement questions.
