Excel is a great tool for managing your lab's samples. It allows you to quickly and easily record the data associated with them, as well as where they are stored. Either you create a Freezer spreadsheet that defines the freezer's structure and places the samples in the boxes. This is often taped to your freezer! A sample template is used to store the information about each sample and the box in which they are stored. You can do basic searching on these pivot tables to help you manage your samples. It's not easy to keep this up-to-date if you ever need to locate or use samples. As the number of samples increases, the sheets become more complicated and unwieldy. This eventually leads to them not being used and freezers becoming disorganized.
