Back-to-One serves as a comprehensive tool for directors and cinematographers in the film and television industry, designed for use on iPads and Macs.
It allows users to arrange actors, cameras, lights, and walls on a top-down interface, and from this configuration, the application produces a detailed shot list, an animated representation of the blocking, and a viewfinder preview based on actual sensor sizes and focal lengths across six formats, including anamorphic. The synchronization between the canvas and the shot list works bidirectionally, ensuring that any changes are reflected in real-time.
The shot list is organized by camera setup instead of by scene, allowing for a more intuitive workflow that aligns with the actual shooting order. Each shot includes a time estimate, along with cumulative totals for each setup and overall for the day. On set, shots can be marked as complete in real-time, and the app features dim and red-light modes to enhance visibility in low-light environments.
Users can import their screenplays in FDX or PDF formats, automatically generating a project that includes all scenes and characters. Additionally, the app allows for the export of set PDFs tailored to each camera position, as well as call sheets, lighting diagrams, and the shot list in various formats like PDF, Excel, or CSV, providing a comprehensive solution for pre-production and on-set organization. This functionality ensures that directors and cinematographers can focus on creativity while managing the logistical aspects of their production seamlessly.
