China broke the controlled nuclear fusion record by keeping the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST,) located at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, by maintaining plasma temperature at 120 million Celsius for 101 seconds and 160 million Celsius for 20 seconds, a major step toward the test run of the fusion reactor, beating a previous record of maintaining the plasma temperature at 100 million C for 100 seconds set by South Korean scientists which in turn beat the earlier EAST record at 100 million degrees for shorter time. "The breakthrough is significant progress, and the ultimate goal should be keeping the temperature at a stable level for a long time," Li Miao, director of the physics department of the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, told the Global Times, adding that the next milestone might be to maintain the stability for a week or more.

A suspected Bitcoin "mining" operation illegally stealing electricity has been found by police who were searching for a cannabis farm.
Officers had been tipped off about the site on the Great Bridge Industrial Estate, Sandwell, and raided it on 18 May, West Midlands Police said. Instead of cannabis plants they found a bank of about 100 computer units.
The force said the cryptocurrency "mine" had effectively stolen thousands of pounds of electricity. Inquiries with network operator Western Power Distribution found an illegal connection to the electricity supply.
Detectives said they were tipped off about lots of people visiting the unit throughout the day and a police drone picked up a lot of heat coming from the building. Sgt Jennifer Griffin said, given the signs, they had expected to find a cannabis farm.

According to a report filed by CNN, the attackers behind one of the worst data breaches of all time have launched a new global attack on more than 150 government agencies, think tanks and other organizations.
This iteration of the attack was initiated when more than 3,000 email accounts were targeted, through what seems to be a compromise of a "Constant Contact email marketing account used by the US Agency for International Development".
James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, theorizes that this new assault is part of a Russian campaign plan for massive cyber attacks against the US and is part of a process of testing the new administration.
What do you think President Biden should do with respect to raising these attacks with foreign counter-parts in countries like Russia, China and North Korea? But what do you think will actually happen?

The Russia-linked threat group believed to be behind the SolarWinds attack has been observed launching a new cyberattack campaign this week. The attacks have targeted the United States and other countries, and involve a legitimate mass mailing service and impersonation of a government agency.
The latest attacks were analyzed by Microsoft, which tracks the threat actor as Nobelium, and by incident response firm Volexity, which has found some links to APT29, a notorious cyberspy group previously linked to Russia.
Targeted organizations include government agencies, think tanks, NGOs, and consultants. Microsoft said at least a quarter of the targets are involved in human rights and international development work. Both Microsoft and Volexity have made available indicators of compromise (IoC) that organizations can use to detect attacks.
