Advertising in Your Boot Sequence? 209

negaPLuCK writes: "i just mounted my first reiserfs partition. When the reiserfs.o module loaded into the kernel what popped out but ads for SuSE, MP3.com and Ecila.com." I've attached the exact text in the read more: it's more like sponsorship than ads, which on one hand is a cool way to finance development, but where is this gonna end?

A Clean Linux Install? 23

linux_penguin asks: "I've been using Linux for a few years now, and have only just hit the wall I believe most intermediate users hit at some time... I hate RPM and all of its idiosyncracies, and I hate all the clutter and unnecessary junk most distributions install. I wanted to compile Enlightenment from CVS, and it turned into a major hassle due to RPM dependencies and libraries being spread everywhere. What I would like to achieve is an absolute basic install, and then build the system up slowly with source (with most stuff being installed into /usr/local hopefully, leaving the basic install clean and untouched). I know this is a fairly tall order, but has anyone achieved this to any degree and can anyone give me advice? What's the best distro for *this purpose*? Or am I better off building my box from the ground up, to the point of compiling *everything* from source? I would like to use this as a learning experience to gain greater knowledge of Linux and how it works."

Cisco 605 Drivers For Linux? 6

parad1gm asks: "So I was an idiot and when offered my choice of a free Cisco 605 internal DSL modem or a $50 external 675 router, I opted for free. Now I cry nightly as I stop to swap out my Linux drive with my Windows 98 drive. If anyone has any word on drivers for the 605 drop me a line."

What Happened To Moonlight 3D? 4

doon asks: "Just got a new box and wanted to check out how Moonlight 3D worked on it. Went to www.moonlight3d.org to see what the latest version was and there was a simple note saying 'As you can see, Moonlight3D.org has been stripped down to a website that's not really worth visiting any more. It deeply saddens us to have to do this, but it was the right thing to do.' Does anybody know what happened?"

Journaling Flash File System 28

menthos writes: "It seems like Axis Communications has brought a YAJFS (Yet Another Journaling File System) to Linux. It is however a bit different, in that it is designed for flash memory filesystems, as in Axis's own Web cams. It is GPL, and the JFFS link is here. Maybe this could mean more Linux PDAs?"

Red Hat Is Not Linux (dot org) 272

PanchoNB writes: "There is a new site on the net. This site is out to show that Red Hat is a Linux distribution but Linux is not just Red Hat." It's at RedHatIsNotLinux.org. We all know this already, but it doesn't hurt to nudge vendors, nor to have a place to point your pointy-haired boss. Sign their petition, or sign up to help maintain a list.

What Organizational Methods Do LUGs Use? 6

spacey-g asks: "What methods are used by Linux User Groups (especially those in the US) to organize their group? Is it president/vice president/etc., anarchy, amorphous, monarical, three branches of government? What types of rules are typically laid down during meetings: Robert's Rules of Order, WWF rules of disorder, etc?. With the Linux community growing every day, I feel it is important to understand how local groups are handling the task of managment and interaction with other groups." Any LUG officers: please feel free to share what methods have and have not worked for your groups.

Abit Violating The GPL? 115

petard writes: "I just learned about Abit's GNU/Linux distribution, Gentus. According to this discussion, it seems that Abit has not seen fit to release source code to their modifications of various GPL'd utilities. Even worse, it appears that they've slightly modified BP6Mon (from redseb at GoUPiL) and released it binary-only and under the "Abit License"! " Allright, everyone turn off the flames and concentrate on making sure that they are in fact distributing in binary-form-only GPLd code. We need a good contact point @abit to send a polite reminder. If you can't be polite, you won't help anything.

Kernel Traffic #64 And The 2.4 Kernel TODO 101

New Linux Supercomputer Forecasts Rain 81

buzzcutbuddha writes "Linux PR has a press release about a new weather forecasting supercomputer running Linux built by High Performance Technologies, Inc. that will be unveiled on Wednesday by NOAA. There is even a phone number to call to tour the High Performance Computer Center. " (let's see if the trolls can be clever for a change ;) Anyhoo 276 nodes, but its costed $15M? Red Hat 'Piranha' Security Risk - And Fix 153

patrixmyth writes "A default password of "Q" in the standard Red Hat 6.2 installation of the Piranha module opens a Web server to intrusion, according to Internet Security Systems. The problem was discovered during a review of Open Source code, and the fix is already available. Another victory for Open Source! The MSNBC article is here. The fix is here, or you could just reset the password yourself for the Piranha module."

Now at www.linuxfromscratch.org you can teach yourself how Linux works and even make your own Linux distro from the info they have at this site." Quad G4 Boards 61

su-geek writes " Synergy Microsystems offers QUAD G4 boards as well as QUAD G3 boards which all run SMP linux. Not only that but you can add more than one board to the dual PCI backplane." I didn't find any evidence of running Linux, and they don't appear to be motherboards: they look like addons, but still, they look nifty. I want a couple CPUs dedicated to running OpenGL screensavers in my root window or something.

Linux And The G-Men: FOSE 2000 56

From a hundred feet up, the action on the floor at FOSE would look like that of any technical tradeshow. Eager vendors try to get their names into the heads of buyers, and the aisles are jammed with swag-toting prospects. The show floor has plenty of the power suits and eager vendors that any other shows do, but also more than a scattering of military insignia, camouflage and Marine crew cuts. And for the first time, just a quick stroll from the 50,000 square foot Microsoft display, this year's FOSE floor also featured Linux vendors and a dedicated Linux pavilion. (Read more.)

Solaris And Linux NFS Problems 3

mrgrumpy asks: "I run Debian (unstable, woody) kernel 2.2.14 with everything dangerously up to date, and I also run a Solaris7 (Sparc not Intel). I've had NFS working (not with autofs, just mount and share) between the two boxes fine for a few weeks since I set them up. I recently applied a patch cluster from SunSolve to the Sun box, and lo and behold, NFS stopped working. In the patch list there were quite a few NFS fixes with the kernel patch 106541-10. I have the home directories, and a development directory from the Sun box (which serves NIS, NFS, and just about everything) mounted on the Linux box. Most of the time nothing goes wrong. But, when I run the distributed.net client on the Linux box, which needs to read and write files that are mounted across from the Sun box, it locks up and I get messages such as 'Apr 17 14:20:31 boink kernel: nfs: task 1473 can't get a request slot...' in the logs." Can anyone figure out what's going wrong here? (Read more)
