Gark writes: "There's an interesting article at Upside Today that talks about the Bayonne project, which has the potential to change the telecommunications industry the same way that Free Software has changed computing. It's interesting that the project got its start when a proprietary software developer was going out of business, and decided to GPL their source code, thereby creating new business opportunitites." The article talks a lot about Open Source and the Net, compared to the Telco industry and its history of proprietary systems. It's a good read.

Fawking DSL writes "``NetBSD can be intimidating from a Linux user's perspective. However, as the Linux user base grows, more people are finding their needs aren't being met by traditional Linux distributions. NetBSD is ready to step up to fill this niche. How secure do you feel? Occams Razor points to "A great interview with [Jay Beale,] the Lead developer, about the Linux Bastille project." Beale talks about the direction that Bastille has taken, and seems fairly pragmatic about the Linux security model and computer security in general. A nugget: "... to fully secure a system, you really have to grind it into dust, scatter the pieces to the wind, and hope that Entropy does [its] part. Since you can't do this, you make tradeoffs."

David Hume writes: "Upside Today has an article entitled Penguin Payola which also does a good job of surrounding the recent complaining by Tucows and ZD-Net that Linux reviews are bought instead of earned. Upside Today reaches the same concusion as Penguinista regarding Reality On The "Purchased" Linux Reviews."

Jeff Kwiatkowski asks: "We are looking to roll out Linux to over 2500 desktops and could use any advice that we can get. We need security info, implementation suggestions and any other advice that you would care to offer. We are currently evaluating Debian, Caldera and Red Hat. I also want a minimalist desktop, so I have been leaning toward WindowMaker as the window manager. In addition, we currently have machines with 32 meg of RAM (fast processors, though) and would like to keep the upgrade to 64 meg, only, if possible. Lastly, do any of you have any thoughts on Word Perfect vs. Applixware?" For those of you who think that the claim 'Linux is not ready for the desktop' is a falsehood, then this story is for you. As you can see, people are looking at deploying Linux on the desktop, and suggestions from you guys could make this process a lot easier.

Chicken can run writes: "Kaydara announced Thursday in a press release the port of FilmBox to Red Hat Linux V6.2. FilmBox is a real-time character animation and motion capture system and was the software behind the groovy slow-motion camera fx in The Matrix. What is interesting is that it is the first such system to be available on Red Hat Linux, opening further the door to major 3D production oportunities on the OS."

Is this a real problem? Are reviewers induced to write good reviews by the implied promise of future free software? If so, what do we do about it? Who do we trust? Do we trust Slashdot? :)" I don't think my family even trusts me. Course the only software I've bought in the last 6 months was Diablo2 (Which I beat thank you ;).

BJH writes: "This hit the newspapers in Japan this morning - Sony, Toshiba, NEC, Fujitsu, Hitachi and Mitsubishi (basically the entire electronics industry in Japan, with the notable exception of Matsushita) will be setting up the "Japan Embedded Linux Consortium" in cooperation with TurboLinux and a whole bunch of other groups to produce a version of Linux suitable for use as an embedded OS for home electronics, mobile phones, cars, industrial machinery - in fact, just about anything with a CPU. Bryan Mattern writes: "An adapted version of Red Hat 6.2 centered around Linux Virtual Server/cold failover is now available. The price is $1995, but includes a year of support for a node." This is also known as Red Hat High Availability Server 1.0.

Ian Murdock started the Debian Project in 1993 and was its leader until 1996. Now he's president and CEO of Progeny Linux Systems, a company working on a Debian-based system called Linux NOW. Whyte Wolf writes: "Olympus is a new remote administration suite for Linux. Its currently in development by Mount Linux a company based out of Calgary, Alberta. This is a really neat little product, with some cool ideas (I especially like the NetMessage class) and ofcourse, it's Open Source. They're looking at developing a Windows client to allow Win32 users to administer a Linux system remotely."

Colin Winters asks: "I've run Linux for a few years, and have been working on securing my system recently. I've also started looking into OpenBSD because of its security. Are there any Linux distributions with the goal of being secure in a default installation, like OpenBSD is? I think this is an issue that needs to be faced-with linux growing in popularity, there's going to be a lot of boxes being cracked if they aren't secured."

FullClip asks: "In the July issue of PC Magazine, Red Hat Professional is compared to Windows NT/2000 on basis of ServerBench, which tests the maximum Transactions Per Second (TPS) for a given number of clients. Red Hat 6.1 (when tweaked) matched the performance of Windows, but showed a terrible decrease in performance at about 24 clients to a weeping 20 % of the level that Windows was able to maintain. Somehow this disturbs me. Doesn't Linux perform better than that bad in client-server environments? If someone can point me to an non-FUD benchmark site, it would be appreciated..." Is this yet another case where benchmarks have been skewed severely to show a deficiency that doesn't exist? Or is this another area where Linux needs improvement? Imagine, if you will, a Linux trade show set up in America's heartland. Now, imagine corporate interest from companies like Atipa, Red Hat and LinuxMall. Imagine sixty-thousand square feet of exposition space and plenty of space for panels. Now, imagine that only about three hundred people show up throughout the week, that Red Hat's delegation leaves before the show even starts, and that by Friday, only three exhibitors remain on the show floor. Welcome to LinuxFest 2000. Since I was at the show, I think a first-person-only account would be unfair. Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York - Despite the overwhelming Windows orientation of PC Expo (Apple didn't show up at all), there have been a few signs of Linux life. Today's 11:30 a.m. keynote speech was given jointly by Mark Bolzern of LinuxMall.com and John "Maddog" Hall of Linux International.

SlickJim asks: "Baan, up until recently a major name in the Enterprise Resource Planning [ERP] Market, is in trouble -- last time I checked market capitalization was down from a high around $8 billion to something around $0.5 billion. as shown in this company profile. Possibly it will be bought out by one of the usual "strip 'em milk 'em" suspects -- CA, Geac or some other big business software vendor. A buyer would have to make an enormous investment, in technology and marketing, to restore confidence in the product. This investment would probably wipe out any likelihood of making a profit by selling licenses. So what would happen if Baan released the code for their ERP platform under an Open Source licence?"
