Journal wowbagger's Journal: Bring pressure to bear on Delorme 4

This is in response to comment 4260855 - bringing pressure to bear on Delorme.

I'd like anybody who contacts Delorme to add a comment to this comment, so that we all can see how many they got. Once, when I had contacted them, they told me "We've never gotten any other requests for this...". In case they try that one again, I'd like to have some evidence....

Addendum 17 Sept 2002
I noticed that the message I set up in this thread with the addresses for Delorme wasn't necessarily visible, depending upon your settings.

I would suggest sending requests for Linux support to:
sales@delorme.com

or better still, write (on paper, with proper spelling) to

DeLorme
Two DeLorme Drive
P.O. Box 298
Yarmouth, ME 04096
USA

The head of Delorme's name is David Delorme, perhaps you could address your letters to "Sales Manager" and CC David Delorme.

Here's a starting template:

15 Sept. 2002

From:
Me
My Address
My City, My State, My Zip code
Email: me@my.email
Tel: (000)-555-1212

To:
Head of Sales
DeLorme
Two DeLorme Drive
P.O. Box 298

Re: porting your products to Linux

Dear Sir:

I am writing to you to request that you consider porting your consumer applications (e.g. Street Atlas, AAA MapNGo) to the GNU/Linux operating system. There is a growing demand for mapping and trip planning software under Linux, and your products are among the best solutions for this.

It would be feasible to port your application in such a manner that you could, with one code base, support Apple Macintosh 9.x, Apple Macintosh 10.x, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, *BSD, as well as several of the newer model palmtops (e.g. the Sharp Zaurus) and embedded systems. This would allow you to more rapidly release upgrades as well as targeting more markets.

I would be willing to discuss this matter furthur with you, if you would like more information.

Sincerely,

my_name

CC: David Delorme

Of course, you should modify this - if they get a flood of nearly identical letters they will ignore them.

Then you print out 2 copies. Mail one to David Delorme, and one to Sales Manager.

Use good quality paper, and your best printer.

  • I just licked the envelope containing my request to Delorme for them to either remove me from their mailing list or support Linux.

Now, if only some of the people posting in the story that started all this [slashdot.org] would do the same (send snail mail, that is), perhaps we could effect a change....
