Journal MsGeek's Journal: WallyNavi! w00t!
OK, I have it now. And I am ecstatic.
WallyNavi is a spectacular laptop. It's also big and burly and looks like it belongs on the desk of a Dot Com exec. My only concern is that the machine might be a bit of a distraction in class...not for me, but the rest of the students. Definite "shock and awe" factor. Never mind that it's a 5 year old machine. Macs seem to age well. It helps that this was the equivalent of the car a little old lady only drives to church every Sunday. It didn't see a hell of a lot of use.
The upgrades should make this a real barn-burner. There is one that I might want to get but know that I will not want to pay the inflated prices for: a DVD-ROM. Right now the prevailing price for the DVD-ROM kit for the Wallstreet is $300 if you can find it. Hell, I only paid $300 to buy WallyNavi! Maybe if I get lots and lots of bonus pay from my new job, which btw is working out well.
Linux should be very happy on this machine. Especially considering that it has a 1024 x 768 native resolution...mmmm...desktop real estate without squinting....
Anyway, first thing I have to do is do a nuke and pave on this drive. Some stuff is kinda tweaked here. This is a relatively fresh install, actually...I'm surprised by this much bit rot so early. Maybe it's just the way I care for computers vs. what other people will do.
Still, I am a happy, happy camper. Once I get the 802.11b card up and running I should have lots of fun with hot spots. I wonder if LA Valley College will get a hot spot or two in the future. Hope so!
