Journal CmdrTaco's Journal: Bandwidth Crunch, Comics, OSX11

So on friday we had some DB troubles. After like 120 days of uptime, things went wonky so we had to serve static pages for a few minutes. Here's the irony- since I was at home, on a modem capable of swallowing a wopping 3k a second, some helpful users took to emailing me screenshots. My favorite was the guy who mailed me 3 1/2 meg shots. Thanks! I needed 1.5 megs of proof that the site was wonky ;)

I've finished off the loose issues of comics I had sitting around. Quite a stack. Fortunately, yesterday the nice mail lady brought me a fresh supply of Trade Paperbacks to read. Come 1:30 or so, I can drop offline and read comics for the rest of the afternoon. Invisibles, AstroCity, The Authority, SinCity. Gonna be nice.

Of course tonight is probably the best TV night for the week. My Tivo is gonna be snagging Angel, Sopranos, and Boomtown. Thank god the directivo can record 2 shows at once :) My TivoNET card is on order, so hopefully sometime this week I'll be able to admin my tivo from a webbrowser. This falls under my religious belief that all electronic devices in my house should have an IP. I think my /etc/hosts file should contain records for my electric toothbrush.

Lastly, the world of Mac OS X meets the world of X11. I installed X11 on this mac yesterday and now I have The Gimp. Using TWM was just a little comical, so I installed most of the WMs available on fink. Trip down memory lane. I'm gonna run wmaker for a few days I think. Or at least until I go to the office and pull down enlightenment on a fatter pipe than my cursed modem. It's awfully strange running X11 apps on the Mac desktop. In rootless mode it actually uses the Quartz window drop shadows to do what X11 has never been able to do under native XF86. It amuses me greatly.

But mostly fink has returned vim to my hands. Ah glorious vim. Its like coming home.

With all the fancy scientists in the world, why can't they just once build a nuclear balm?
