Submission + - Xeyes Ported to Real Life

An anonymous reader writes: The well-known Unix tool xeyes has been ported to Windows. No, not the Microsoft version, but the version you look out of on a sunny day. Photos and video are available. The result is very cool, and a little scary. This could be a fun way to scare off those kids who hang around your neighborhood...

Submission + - Canadian ISP Blocking Encrypted Email

An anonymous reader writes: Michael Geist reports that Rogers, one of Canada's largest ISPs, has implemented new technologies that may limit access to basic services such as email. The move comes as a result of Rogers packet shaping, which limits the bandwidth allocated to peer-to-peer applications. Many P2P apps now encrypt their data, so in response Rogers is simply degrading all encrypted traffic and in the process mistaking encrypted email traffic for BitTorrent traffic.

Submission + - Apple laptop gets paw-ned by a pussy cat

An anonymous reader writes: ZDNet Australia has rounded up an incident on the Apple user forum where an iBook owner discovered his cat was responsible for hacking into his password-protected notebook. It turns out the system was missing a very old security patch, which meant his cat, which liked sleeping on his keyboard, managed to automatically wake the computer and bypass it's security. They summed it up: "I really don't think there will ever be a better example to help bang the message home: Patch your systems or even a cat will be able to break into them."

Linux Makes For Greener Computing 186

An anonymous reader writes "The UK Government reckons that servers with Linux installed are greener than those running Windows. " The reasoning is that Open Source software tends to have lower hardware requirements and requires less frequent hardware upgrades to "keep up with the Joneses"; the Tory shadow chancellor has estimated that the UK could save ~600 million pounds per year by switching to Linux.

Submission + - Small Business Owner Silenced By FBI

zyl0x writes: The Washington Post has a story online about the owner of a small Internet business and the recipient of an infamous "National Security Letter". Even though the FBI has retracted the order for information, they have yet to retract the gag order that accompanied the NSL. From the article:

Living under the gag order has been stressful and surreal. Under the threat of criminal prosecution, I must hide all aspects of my involvement in the case — including the mere fact that I received an NSL — from my colleagues, my family and my friends. When I meet with my attorneys I cannot tell my girlfriend where I am going or where I have been. I hide any papers related to the case in a place where she will not look. When clients and friends ask me whether I am the one challenging the constitutionality of the NSL statute, I have no choice but to look them in the eye and lie.
The Washington Post has made a rare exception for this person, by posting their story anonymously.
