Once again, it appears that the Ubuntu team and community have succeeded in creating a simple yet feature-rich OS which is accessible to all computer users and is a direct competitor to Mac OS X and Windows Vista.

AxminsterLeuven writes: After yesterday's announcement that Leonard Nimoy will be playing Spock again, reports are coming in that none other than Robbie Williams will be cast as Captain Kirk. Here's just one example, that quotes director J.J. Abrams as saying: "I think (Williams)'d be a good Captain Kirk. The Kirk in my movie is quite young, it's like the early years."

AxminsterLeuven writes: The Beeb is carrying a story on new tightened New York anti-piracy legislation: A man has been been arrested, after smuggling video recording equipment into a theatre showing the new Transformers movie. "Kalidou Diallo, 48, has been charged with unauthorised use of a video camera in a cinema. Under upgraded legislation, he could face six months in jail and fines of up to $5,000 (£2,487) if found guilty," the BBC reports.

AxminsterLeuven writes: Ars Technica reports on Microsoft's refusal to work with Red Hat on Windows/Linux interoperability, without Red Hat signing a patent deal first: "Linux distributor Red Hat wants to work with Microsoft to improve interoperability without signing a patent pledge, but Microsoft says that a mutual patent indemnification pact — like the controversial covenant not to sue that Microsoft established with Novell — is a prerequisite for collaboration."

chuckdpe1 writes: Following up on the report that the PLAYSTATION 3 would see a $100 price cut taking place the week after E3 2007, GameDaily has confirmed with "a merchandising manager at one of the world's biggest retailers" that the 60 GB version of the PS3 will indeed drop to $499, starting on July 12, one day after Sony's E3 press conference. GameDaily also reports that the new price is indeed indicative a retail-wide price drop, not a Circuit City specific sale, as a handful of speculators have posited.

christian.einfeldt writes: "Microsoft has spent a good deal of money persuading national and international standards bodies that its OOXML is the truly "neutral" standard for office productivity formats, and has had quite some success in so doing. Now, the Foundation for Free Information Infrasctructure (FFII) is hoping to tap the wisdom of crowds by starting a publicity campaign to counter some of the headway made by Microsoft in this area. Tectonic reporter James Archibald quotes FFII campaigner Benjamin Henrion as saying,

'It's time for activists across the world to stand up, to reach out to their national ISO bodies, and to explain why Microsoft's format is not open, not a standard, and not XML.'
But the FFII is not asking activists to suffer too terribly for their cause, as the winning campaign would earn a 25,000 Euro purse for the most clever campaign."

Tinman_au writes: GameDaily is reporting the Sony Playstation 3 price drop thats been rumoured for a while may finally be here.

Although Sony has yet to confirm a price drop officially, GameDaily BIZ has received confirmation from the retail sector that the PS3 will be dropped to $499 next week. Sony itself recently talked about "refining" the PS3 price. Now it appears to be happening.

mdsolar writes: "MSNBC is reporting that the Oportunity Rover, planned to descend into Victoria Crater, may end up defunct owing to lack of power by the end of two large dust storms now blowing on Mars. 99% of sunlight is currently being blocked by dust in the atmosphere and managers are trying to figure out what more can be shut down to save power. morpheus83 writes: "The facade of a Manchester skyscraper was originally covered with small mosaic tiles, but after 6 months they began to detach and fall. The tiles were replaced with a much greener solution — 7,244 Sharp 80 Watt solar panels to be precise. Interestingly only 4898 of these panels while the rest are dummy panels. Not only do the solar panels provide a weatherproof barrier but also provide 380-kilowatts of electricity which is enough to power 1000 PC's for a year. Additionally there are 24 wind turbines on the roof, which provide 10% of the total power used by the building."

This month: trash monsters, the boring identical monsters you are forced to kill again and again. From the article: "So many role-playing games fall prey to what I call Long Corridor Syndrome. At a certain point, late in the game, you can tell that the developers ran out of time, money and ideas, and all you find are long, straight corridors filled with monsters and nothing else of interest."
