An anonymous reader writes: Jonathan Coulton, the musician responsible for such geek favorites as "Code Monkey" and "Re: your brains," blogs about his latest masterpiece "Still Alive" (called by many the best song in modern gaming), which plays during the end credit sequence of Portal. He write about his initial contact with Valve as well as the actual recording and production process. For the moment, the only legal way to hear the song, and the best way, is in the end credits of Portal, however Valve has indicated they may be releasing it separately and thus far they haven't asked that copies be removed from YouTube. If you intend to play the game, it's recommended you don't listen to the song as it does contain some spoilers. I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.

Because of Mozilla's extreme focus on Firefox and the web, they feel Thunderbird isn't getting the attention it deserves, and thus that they "should find a new, separate organizational setting for Thunderbird." Three options are briefly explored: a Thunderbird foundation, a new Thunderbird subsidiary of the Mozilla foundation, and releasing Thunderbird as a community project like SeaMonkey. They're hoping to start a public discussion on Thunderbird's future, and are seeking additional ideas for how to handle this.

There will be no more releases of version 4.4. PHP notes today is the third anniversary of the release of PHP 5 and that PHP 6 is soon on the way. PHP recommends developers spend the rest of the year updating applications to run on PHP 5, and offers a migration guide.

Ykant writes: According to an AP article, the Wikipedia entry of pro wrestler Chris Benoit (who was found dead in his home earlier this week, along with his wife and child) was updated at 12:01 a.m. Monday, about 14 hours before authorities say the bodies were found. It said he missed a match Saturday night "stemming from the death of his wife." An Atlanta news station reports that a Wikipedia user has admitted to making the edits, but had no advance knowledge of the event, calling it a "terrible coincidence".

Authorities want to know who updated the Wikipedia entry, since the IP address associated with the change is registered in Stamford, Connecticut, where WWE is headquartered. Of course, the incident is also a clear violation of Wikipedia's "no original research" rule."

However, The Associated press says (via Yahoo News) that "Investigators had not yet discovered the bodies of pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son when someone altered Benoit's Wikipedia entry to mention his wife's death, authorities said. Authorities said Thursday they are trying to determine who altered the entry on the collaborative reference site 14 hours before authorities discovered the bodies of the couple and their son."

Wiki says "Editing of this article by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled until July 8, 2007 (UTC) due to vandalism.""

An anonymous reader writes: A wikipedia vandal inserted into wikipedia information that Nancy Benoit was dead 14 hours before police found out. The vandal later came forward and said it was just a coincidence, and apologizing for ever vandalizing wikipedia:

...I feel incredibly bad for all the attention this got because of the fact that what I said turned out to be the truth. Like I said it was just a major coincidence, and I will never vandalize anything on wikipedia or post wrongful information. I've learned from this experience. I just can't believe what I wrote was actually the case, I've remained stunned and saddened over it....

earthworm2 writes: Wikipedia had quite the scoop on the death of the wife of wrestler Chris Benoit. It reported her death on 401 GMT 6/25. This was eight hours before authorities discovered the bodies of the couple and their son. Authorities are now looking into who posted the information, in the hope of learning more about the alleged murder-suicide.
After all, I think it was Agatha Christie who said, "The killer always returns to the Wikipedia entry of the crime." Or something like that.

glesga_kiss writes: An interesting article on wikinews points to edits of WWE Wrestler Chris Benoit's page on wikipedia suggesting foreknowledge of the murder. Edits from an IP in Connecticut, later followed by one from a wifi provider in Australia state that he cancelled an engagement due to the death of his wife. These were posted 13 hours prior to the polices discovery of the bodies after concerned family members asked the police to check up on him after erratic behaviour. A member of the Wikimedia Foundation has suggested that the IP address quite likely belongs to the WWE Headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut.

According to Fox News, the IP where the edit came from is located in Stamford, CT, home of World Wrestling Entertainment.

An anonymous reader writes: Ain't It Cool News just discovered some footage of JJ Abrams' new Star Trek movie (scroll past the Tholian Web footage) that was leaked onto YouTube. The footage shows Abrams is doing a very retro Star Trek with a cast of unknowns rather than the rumored big name stars. The most intriguing aspect of the videos, though, is the fact he's shooting with some sort of galactic basic language rather than English! I can only assume this was inspired by his friend Mel Gibson's use of native languages in his recent films.
