Submission + - On Call for 24/7/365 Tech Support? 1

xoundmind writes: I work for a technology services agency in the South Carolina state government. My boss is thinking of getting me a cell phone in the event of an after hours server crash. The only problem is that I am the only person in the agency that can provide the appropriate support. So I would essentially be on call at all times.

How do folks here handle that sort of thing? Is this even legal?

Comment In retrospect, probbaly not the best approach (Score 1) 739

Installed Debian testing on an old Dell and only had dial up at the time. Of course the Winmodem didn't work, so that meant a custom compile and fighting with getting a driver installed from Linuxant. AA lot of struggle and learning involved, but how do I keep the damn thing updated without tying up my phone line every evening? Through the magic of cron, pon, poff, I automagically had the it updating itself at 3 AM every day.

Wheeeh! The kids today have it easy.
