Submission + - Downtown Chicago Sci-fi convention canceled (chi-fi.org)

An anonymous reader writes: With it only being a few months from happening a Chicago Sci-fi convention named Chi-Fi was recently canceled. As per the statement released from the organizers:

"A senior Westin employee referred to our staff, attendees, and guests as “freaks,” and hotel staff expressed their disapproval of our anti-harassment policy."

Was listed as one of the main reasons for the convention's cancelation. Among others including citing safety concerns of it's guests, among which are some Hollywood stars, and attendees. They did make a note that it was specifically the Chicago River North Westin and that their opinions do not reflect the opinion of Westin or Starwood hotels who have played host to many conventions across the country such as these.

It is saddening that such actions have prevented another Sci-fi convention from being held downtown Chicago. This was the first con of it's kind in almost 10 years to be downtown Chicago and not in one of the suburbs such as Rosemont or Elgin.

Chicago River North Westin has released a statement on their Facebook page denying the incident. Starwood hotel's corporate offices have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.

Hopefully in 2015 we will finally see a Sci-fi convention grace downtown Chicago again.

United States Begins Flying Stealth Bombers Over South Korea 567

skade88 writes "The New York Times is reporting that the United States has started flying B-2 stealth bomber runs over South Korea as a show of force to North Korea. The bombers flew 6,500 miles to bomb a South Korean island with mock explosives. Earlier this month the U.S. Military ran mock B-52 bombing runs over the same South Korean island. The U.S. military says it shows that it can execute precision bombing runs at will with little notice needed. The U.S. also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting its allies in the region. The North Koreans have been making threats to turn South Korea into a sea of fire. North Korea has also made threats claiming they will nuke the United States' mainland."

Comment No, The Higgs Has NOT Been Confirmed (Score 4, Informative) 292

When will people stop publishing news articles saying "the Higgs has been confirmed to exist"? This is driving me bat-shit insane. No, the Higgs has NOT necessarily been discovered. Particles have been observed in the LHC at energy levels that match the expected characteristics of the Higgs, but we DO NOT KNOW if it is the standard model Higgs or just something else that looks like it. Goddamn.

Comment Motorola Canopy (Score 1) 239

I worked for a WISP for 3 years and I can tell you that most WiFi mesh gear sucks, and it relies on very noisy radio space that is subject to a high noise floor and interference from all kinds of other gear. I'd look into a point-to-multipoint system like Motorola Canopy. You hook up a tower (water towers are especially great, as you can often trade tower access for sharing bandwidth with the municipality) with 6 access points each covering a 60deg area around the tower. Then you "backhaul" the tower using another wireless link to your central office where you have your upstream connection, ideally fiber. As time goes on you grow by adding more towers, increasing your geographical service area, adding more fiber links, eventually doing BGP across the network, etc.
