Submission + - Surfer Devises 'Theory of Everything' (telegraph.co.uk)

Dylan Knight Rogers writes: "Surfer dude physicist Garrett Lisi has devised a 'theory of everything' based upon the complex mathematical constructs of the 'E8'. From the article:

E8 encapsulates the symmetries of a geometric object that is 57-dimensional and is itself is 248-dimensional. Lisi says "I think our universe is this beautiful shape." What makes E8 so exciting is that Nature also seems to have embedded it at the heart of many bits of physics. One interpretation of why we have such a quirky list of fundamental particles is because they all result from different facets of the strange symmetries of E8. Lisi's breakthrough came when he noticed that some of the equations describing E8's structure matched his own. "My brain exploded with the implications and the beauty of the thing," he tells New Scientist. "I thought: 'Holy crap, that's it!'
His most interesting treatise on physics can be found here."

Submission + - The bet is on! Ubuntu vs. Microsoft (ubuntuforums.org)

pak9rabid writes: "From the thread: This is the deal: I have to use Ubuntu for 30 days. IF there is anything I can't do on Ubuntu (except for games which he reluctantly conceded is Microsoft turf) that I can do on Vista, then I get a brand new laptop courtesy of my buddy. IF on the other hand, I lose, I have to pay for his new laptop."

Submission + - Microsoft and Samsung sign Linux patent deal

AceJohnny writes: Microsoft continues with its patent FUD tactic it used with Novell, now striking a deal with Korean giant Samsung. Since the Novell affair, Microsoft had also inked a deal with Fuji-Xerox. Microsoft still hasn't explicited which patents Linux is violating.

Submission + - OpenOffice Could Soon Become Network-enabled

An anonymous reader writes: Linuxtoday.com has picked up a message from the OpenOffice Dev mailing list in which a new company is introducing the GravityZoo OpenOffice porting project with the aim of bringing it to the Internet. GravityZoo is a networked computing platform that looks very interesting. "When OpenOffice.org is "GravityZood", it will become a suite of productivity applications that are always available, online, via a broad range of devices. It will be possible to share and collaborate in real-time, to switch from one device (e.g. a PC) to another (Mobile) device. There will also be no need to save data, because everything you produce is saved automatically on the network. There is no need to download, install or update, the latest version is just available and accessible from any GravityZoo enabled client.

Submission + - UseTheSource: social web site for snippets of code

JohnGrahamCumming writes: "If you've got a snippet of source code, a neat algorithm, a cool mashup, or just an explanation of some awful Windows API you can share it with UseTheSource a new web site I've put together. Using the same 'voting' style as popular social news sites, and divided by language, you can vote on the best snippets of the day. And the entire source of the site is open too."

Submission + - Create an Alien, Win a Prize!

destinyland writes: "A professor of bio-materials believes we're so close to creating artificial life, he's offering a $26,000 prize for the first non-DNA-based lifeform to "break the carbon barrier." He argues researchers are close to do the day when they molecularly engineer a synthetic lifeform — either unknowingly, or covertly — so you can also win a prize by simply identifying a synthetic lifeform created by someone else. ("We're scanning outer space for signs of intelligent life, but who's scanning inner space?") His ultimate goal is promoting safe nanotechnology research, which will only happen with a greater public awareness. The first alien lifeforms won't come from outer space; they'll come from our labs."
