Submission + - What killed the video user (telusplanet.net) 2

SpectateSwamp writes: Almost everybody has a video device of some sort, in cel phones or cameras. Why aren't these devices being used to their fullest.
Was it the public being too picky, wanting every clip to be perfect perfect and shot just right.
Was it that the video kooks grew old learning video editing software after finding what to buy.
Was it the mess of unorganized video files chewing up free disk space. That finally got them?
Was it the legal and social problems involved with shooting and posting video?

Well Spectate Swamp Desktop Search is here to straighten out all these problems. No editing required. Incredible random
player / video organizer. Don't let the Perfect Perfects deter you. I even video in slow motion video playbacks. Closer
up and slowed down. Somehow it works. Quick and dirty.

All by learning how to archive the video with 2 lines of info. Line #1 is the search criteria. Line #2 is the path to the picture or video.
All people need to know about archiving and playing back video learned in 5 minutes.

Been searching flat files with this open source VB5 program since 1999. Searches flat files at 20,000,000 cps displaying hi-lited hits in matching lines only or full context mode. Results can be exported to a results file. Append txt files together. Search and replace option. Run multiple versions with various default settings. I have been yapping and yapping about flat files, only to get great amounts of resistance from the Geeks. The search uses lots of defaults and quick keys (for typists). From startup to shutdown nothing is faster. Channel9 and thedailyWTF.com have the best threads. Check it out. It's the only program you'll ever need

Submission + - Why is Everybody so clueless on Desktop Search

SpectateSwamp writes: "Why is Everybody so clueless on the importance of Desktop Search to the Masses?

I have been building this Desktop Search since 1999.

The visual basic code is Open Source and the exe is
downloadable.

I have been blogging and yapping about search in various
forums. Only to meet with Great resistance.

When I can organize my video, music, pictures and text
there isn't another program that I really need. The OS
becomes irrelevant.

It started as a text search, then picture display was
added when we scanned in 5000+ old family album pictures.

When a match was found and the next line had the path
to a picture. That picture was displayed. It runs manual
and as a screen saver. After a few seconds the caption
on the picture can be displayed or not.

Then came video. With slow motion, Freeze frame and
Preset or Random start points in the video (mpeg2). Similar
options were added for music files (mp3)

Video is by far the most exciting part of Search. I can video
in a book and go directly to a given page and play that back
in slow motion. I can video in forum screens.

It has other important features any Search should have.
Ie EXTRACT. I do a context search for a particular "Subject:"
in my outmail file to build a mailing list from old emails. Then
I search that file in matching lines only searching for "To:" and
I have all the email addresses in an output file. A little editing
removing duplicates etc and I have a clean list. I duplicate that
info with a cut and paste. resort it. The plug the required info
for my search in front of line 1 and 2 rather quickly.

If the Next line is a URL or strictly text, that data is put in the
clipboard for pasting into a browser or as a search string.

It can run background copies of itself and has some primitive
navigation capabilities. That could make for a wonderful video
training tool.

It has no database and can easily be explained to the common man.
(I'll do more training video.)

Thanks

Submission + - Closing the Digital Divide with Desktop Search (ezinearticles.com)

SpectateSwamp writes: "Closing the Digital Divide by dumbing down computing with Desktop Search.

It's not just people in the 3rd world that are on the wrong side of this divide.

Finally a reason for those who have never owned a computer, because of the learning
curve, to purchase one. It's now worthwhile to get that Camcorder or Digital Camera.
This app makes it all so simple. Use computers knowing next-to-nothing and Flourish!
Learn a few of the basic commands and be well on your way to managing, playing,
viewing and mining those important computer files.

Is Desktop Search THE Killer App?

You bet it is. If it deals with: (Video) (Music) (Pictures) and (Text) like this
one does. Use it to organize: your favorite internet (web site URL's) or previous
(search text entries).....

Check out the Search discussion at the following forum: (96,000+ views)

================================================== ============
How I have dumbed down my computer with desktop search:
================================================== ============

My Computer system.

1 Laptop with internet connection.

1 External 120GB backup disk drive

1 External DVD/CD burner/player.

1 Mini DVD Camcorder (Hitachi 350a 10 X Zoom, 4 years old)

1 Digital Camera (Kodak DX3700, 4+ years old)

NO Printer
NO Scanner

That and 1 Killer App called: Desktop Search, is all I'll ever need.

================================================== ============

My backup procedure:

I just make a copy of my personal folder, onto my external backup drive
a drag and drop is all it takes. I like having enough video, pictures and
music on my computer as possible. Maybe up to 40GB of my 80GB drive. Right
now I have (15GB) of data to back up. Takes about 1/2 hour to make a copy
of that.

I do DVD backups of my new video files as they approach the 4.7GB DVD size.
So all my Video, Music, pics and other info will have a DVD or CD backup copy.
The text related data gets backed up as needed. My text backups take next to
no time as the files are a fraction the size of videos.

I have copies of any software that I like in a "other_software" folder not
much there, but handy to have a copy on my external disk drive.

================================================== ============

Reinstalling the Operating System:

If I need to reload my Operating System because of Virus or some such,
all that is needed is my OS Install disks and the external disk drive to
restore my most current backup. Again very simple and not error prone.
A few screen captures of various internet settings and other reload screens
of importance, make it relatively painless to do.

**23Jul07** OS reload done. My data reloaded. Internet connection reloaded.
the few other programs can wait. This makes me very computer & OS free /
independent. I can easily move to that nice shiny Laptop or to that 1st computer.

================================================== ==============

How I use my computer: (With Desktop Search)

-As a text notepad.

-As a research tool.

-Doing screen captures and text grabs of interesting items on the net.
Then use the search, as a screen saver of these jpgs, every once and a while.

-I use 5000+ family album pictures, as my screen saver.
Scanning in the total family album took a couple months. Some of the oldies are
60 to 70 years old. This was probably the most useful project undertaken so far.
All the family members have a copy. Old video formats are next!

-I export all my emails to text, to make them mine forever. I don't panic
if I have to change computers. All my email information is easily searchable.

-I catalog many Web site URL's, from subjects of interest. The search places the
URL info into the clipboard, when a match is found. I just paste that into the
browser. I often run this search in random mode. It never gets boring that way.

-I save Net Search (Google) queries, that I may want to find again later?

-I don't use my Digital Camera as much as I should because I have Video.
There are many people that don't have high speed internet. So do pics for them.

-As my Digital video repository

-I even video net screens in, if the forum post has many many pages.Video in
your favorite book! This program can start and stop anywhere in my video files,
by design or randomly. The Slow motion display option is great for sporting replays.

================================================== ==================

Other PC software I use:

paint

notepad

Internet Browser & Email

================================================== ==================

What data formats I restrict myself to: .txt (Text) .mpg2 (video) .jpg (Picture) .bmp (Picture) .mp3 (Music)

And one or two more.

Others may want more. Many more. And that's OK. For me, I'd keep two maybe
3 copies of those odd ball files. One would be a screen capture of it saved
to JPG (it may take multiples) A second would be a text capture of any text
and numbers saved to a .txt file. A third may be a screen capture of the
logic behind an excel spreadsheet calculation. The final, would be a copy of
the odd ball format itself. These text and screen captures are far less space
than video, so I don't worry about the storage it takes.

With the text and screen capture info, you have everything you need from those other
data formats, far more searchable anywhere and not nearly as prone to data loss.
================================================== ===================

What desktop search opens up:

This system can run multiple copies of itself. Ie run 2 video clips
side by side and in sync with this capability.

Computing is all about: (extract) (sort) and (report). This app is a very
good EXTRACT. Beginner programmers can create useful add-ons that make this
desktop search even better. The possibilities are boundless.

NO database, NO SQL required. (just not needed)

The program can be used to navigate through training videos. A sample or
two, would have users well on their way to exciting training possibilities.

I keep my video segments to between 1 and 2 minutes. They upload to the
net without any editing when they are small and my program can play one
after the other anyway. The program can start play near the end of a small
video much quicker than One that is 30 minutes long. To create separate records
just requires a OFF then ON, on the record button.

With Desktop Search You spend very little time computering; more time creating,
exploring, playing, learning and fun.

================================================== ===================

Finally:

Rejoice, simple computing with all the goodies, is now here for everyone.

Desktop Search simply the greatest program on the Planet.

Submission + - Desktop Search and Video - Why I love My computer (msdn.com)

SpectateSwamp writes: "Digital video and Desktop Search make it way more fun than work.

The search allows me to keep all my Video, Music, Pics and text
in 1 Folder (and a few sub folders) and that's all I need to be
concerned about. I make a couple DVD copies of that and if I lose
my computer. No problem. All my emails and all my web site url's
and favorites are there (and searchable).

If I get a virus I just reinstall the OS and load my data. My
internet stuff and a few other applications that I uploaded over
the net. I do video of these tricky procedures. So I'm free to
use my computer and not really worry about too much.

Low tech computing is Way way more fun than work.

I have been shooting video for 4 years. Big external disk drives
are cheap now. I could start reloading all my video backups. And
that's lots and lots of video.

This 1 program takes most of the Geekieness out of computing.
You need to know 5% or less, of what others do to feel comfortable
with computers. When you have to learn next to nothing about something.
It's easy to learn a lot.

To be off and running, you just need a couple simple commands.

Cut, copy and share video, pictures and text over and from the net
with ease. Just like I do.

I love my computer because I can be a lazy bas***d about fussing
over my computer. I don't worry about anything other than My data.
Popup blockers, firewalls, virus protection, encryption, I just
couldn't care less.

It seems my opinions on Desktop Search and Digital Video run counter
to "expert knowledge" I get banned and blocked on the video forums
and receive similar treatment on the computer related forums. Anyway
I am staying away from the channel9.msdn.com forums just so they
won't take these posts down.

Submission + - Digital Video & DT Search - Computing's Holy G

SpectateSwamp writes: "With this free Non-indexing Desktop Search and a Digital Video camera;
people will have the final solution, for locating, displaying and
otherwise enjoying their digital assets.

Without a doubt; other Desktop Search Engines will follow suit,
with these options and much much more.

Pure Power:
For people to make full use of Digital VIDEO, they will need
some form of search and display program / multiMedia player.
What better than a Desktop Search to archive and play your
video files. Digital Video is the "Final" solution for: training
documentation, note taking, archiving, integrating, watching ,,,,

Security & Indexing vs Speed:
If your key data is backed up, there should be very little concern
for security and its drain on resources; compound that with the load
from "Indexing" Desktop Searchs. And you can have a slow slow computer.

Portability:
Data must move freely. The more common formats move the most
easily. Txt, mp3, bmp, jpg, mpg. This Desktop Search is very
portable as well. For other pesky formats; just video them in.
That is as good a backup, as you could want. Play it back on TV!

Ease of Use:
Just learn a few of the Key functions and people will be well
on their way, to conquering Computer data.

Digital Video & Desktop Search — Computing's Holy Grail."
