Nintendo Already Anticipating Holiday Wii Shortages 246

As we approach the holiday season, Nintendo has already said that they don't expect to keep up with demand for the Wii console. In an interview with the LA Times, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime said they're ramping up production by 33% already, with further increases planned. They're hoping to avoid the scarcity of Wii's that occurred last year, which cost them a great deal of money in potential sales. "We're now producing 2.4 million units a month worldwide. Last year, we made 1.6 million a month. So we've made a 33% increase. One of our competitors projects they will sell 10 million consoles worldwide this year. For us, that's three months of production. We're producing an unprecedented level of hardware to try to meet demand."

Plasma Rocket Successful Full Power Test 169

Matt_dk writes "VASIMR is a new high-power plasma-based space propulsion technology, initially studied by NASA and now being developed privately by Ad Astra. A VASIMR engine could maneuver payloads in space far more efficiently and with much less propellant than today's chemical rockets. Ultimately, VASIMR engines could also greatly shorten robotic and human transit times for missions to Mars and beyond."

Why do Microsoft still insist that every page on the web must do 'something special' to get their browser to render properly?!! It would make more sense if people had to do 'something special' to make MSIE behave like older versions.
How would that make more sense? That would cause everyone who wrote a website between 2001 and 2007 for ie6 or ie7 to have to go back and add <insert special tag here> to every one of their web pages just so those pages would use the rendering engine of the older ie browser, they were originally written for, in ie8.

On the other hand, if you are building a new website, then you should have no problem adding in one extra tag because you are going through the trouble of making sure the pages render correctly in all browsers anyway.

Meta tags have always struck me as sloppy anyway. And it's not like they're asking you to add something new to the top of the page that replaces the doctype. Adding something as trivial as an extra meta tag to your "new website" should be a non-issue. But backwards compatibility being preserved for a newer version of a browser viewing older web pages without forcing a developer to update all those old web pages makes the most sense to me.

Submission + - The Stagnation of JavaScript (mozillazine.org)

AmaDaden writes: Things might be heating up between the Mozilla folks and the IE folks. Why? Mozilla and others have been pushing for work on ES4 or ECMAScript 4th Edition. ECMAScript is better known as JavaScript. While Microsoft was a force behind the creation of all previous editions of ECMAScript since achieving browser dominance it seems they have stopped contributing. In addition they are now opposing ES4. It's worth mentioning that "Brendan's Roadmap" is from Mr.Javascript himself Brendan Eich

Submission + - Wii Virtual Console releases Japan only games (wikipedia.org)

AmaDaden writes: This week on the Wii virtual console only two games were released. Why is this news? They were both Japan only games before this. It seems that Nintendo has started to translate and release Japan only games in the US. The games are Sin and Punishment for N64 and Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels for NES. An interesting note is that both games seem to have a 20% translation tax. NES games are normally $5 and this is $6 and N64 games are normally $10 and this is $12. Just what else does Nintendo have planed for it's Virtual Console?
