I know very few in IT that "like" Apple products. We have about 50% Android and 50% Apple and I deal with the Apple users daily. Android users maybe a couple times a month. And that's typically to hand them a new battery. While Apple software quality speaks in logic, real world is a different story. For the record, I own 2 MacBook Pros, a MacPro, and 2 iMacs as their hardware is decent. All run Windows/Linux almost exclusively.

Submission + - Google Wins $35 Million U.S. Government Contract Over Microsoft (techcrunch.com)

Stratus311 writes: Google and its partner Onix Networking just won a $35 million contract to run the U.S. Department of the Interior‘s new cloud-based email and collaboration system. This wasn’t always a sure bet for Google. In 2010, the Department of the Interior awarded Microsoft a $59.3 million contract to run its email and collaboration system. Google and its Ohio-based partner Onix Networking quickly filed a suit to block this contract. In Google’s view, the Interior Department’s procurement process unfairly favored Microsoft and never gave it a fair chance. Google finally withdrew its lawsuit last September after the Department scrapped its plans to use Microsoft’s solution because its original decision was “now stale in light of new developments in technology and entrants into the market.”

Seriously, if what Sony does pisses you off, do what I did and put your PS3 up on Craigslist to trade for a 360. I personally didn't use it for Blueray functionality and if I really needed it in my office (where my 360 lives), I can pick up a cheap Blueray for next to nothing now.

Your "Windows Professionals" should be fired. If re-imaging is the only thing they can do to fix that then they are no more knowledgeable than your boss. I've worked with a guy who's thought process was the same. "Well, I couldn't figure it out in 20 seconds so I guess I better re-image it". He was a help desk tech for 13 years (13 years!!!) and was finally fired when new management came in and saw how worthless he was. And I'm sorry but Linux does not "work just as well as Windows". I support both in my environment as well as about 70 Macs. Honestly, they are all no different from each other. It's a different presentation. Bad or improperly installed drivers on any one of them will break it. Software available for one isn't available for the other. I personally run Mac OS X 10.7, Windows 7, and Ubuntu (Classic session of course) on my MacBook Pro 2011. If only my AMD graphics and Broadcom 4331 were supported under Ubuntu without having to patch firmware and compile it from source. Yes, Windows can be administered much easier than the rest. That's the fucking point! I'm an admin myself and I like to click things. I'd rather not have to remember a hundred different terminal commands to do something that can be accomplished with a few clicks on a Windows box. GPO's are fucking fantastic by the way.

Submission + - AT&T Killing Unlimited data for Tethering abus (venturebeat.com)

Stratus311 writes: Drink up your free AT&T tethering while you can, Jailbreakers. AT&T has got you in its sights.

The carrier confirmed today that it will soon begin killing unlimited-data plans for users who hack their iPhones and use unauthorized tethering or hotspot apps. The new rules also apply to users of Android and other smartphones who hack their way to free tethering access.
