LHC Offline Until April 2009 (Or Longer) 298

rufey writes "The recent problems at the Large Hadron Collider will now keep it idle until spring 2009. The official press release is here. The LHC went offline due to a suspected failure in a superconducting connection, which overheated and caused around 100 of the LHC's super-cooled magnets to heat up by as much as 100 degrees. This resulted in the accidental release of a ton of liquid helium. The process required to repair the failed superconducting connection involves weeks of warming up the affected area from -456 degrees Fahrenheit to room temperature, and then several more weeks to cool it back down after the repair is made. The total amount of time to do this will spill over into CERN's scheduled winter maintenance/shutdown period, which is partly done to save money on electricity during the period of peak demand."

I agree 100% that more muscle mass leads to a higher resting metabolic rate.

However, please also consider this question: is strength training the only way to build (or maintain) muscle mass? I say that it isn't. If you do regular, intense aerobic exercise, that will have a significant effect on muscle mass as well.

If you disagree, try doing several 5 mile runs a week, so that you're completing 5 miles in around 45 minutes, and so that you're hitting 20+ miles/week. From personal experience, you are going to have some muscle mass in your legs if you do that.

And as a bonus, a good rule of thumb is that you burn about 100 calories per mile that you run. If you run 20 miles in a week, that's 2000 calories a week, which means you're losing 0.5 lb of weight every week compared to not running at all, just on the pure calories burnt while actually running.

Submission + - Linux to be installed in every Russian school (cnews.ru) 2

J_Omega writes: According to the Russian IT site CNews, Linux is slated to be installed in every Russian school by 2009. The article makes it appear that it will be going by the (unimaginative and nationalist) name "Russian OS." As stated in the article: "The main aim of the given work is to reduce dependence on foreign commercial software and provide education institutions with the possibility to choose whether to pay for commercial items or to use the software, provided by the government." Initial testing installations are supposed to begin next year in select districts. Is 2008/09 the year of Linux on the (Russian) desktop?
