feldhaus writes "The BBC reports that the first beams for over one year have been successfully sent around the complete circumference of the Large Hadron Collider. Engineers do not yet have a stable circulating beam but they hope to by 0600 GMT on Saturday."

You can actually see the SIM slot in it so it must be a GSM capable phone.

Absolutely nothing. There's a program called pdanet that has been around on windows mobile for a long time just for this purpose.

If it was struck by a meteor how would the aircraft be able to send maintenance messages minutes apart ? This is the part that makes the scenario unlikely to me.

This is usally ARP traffic which is broadcast to everyone on a LAN segment by nature.

secmartin writes "Researchers at Delft University warn that large parts of the BitTorrent network might collapse if The Pirate Bay is forced to shut down. A large part of the available torrents use The Pirate Bay as tracker, and other available trackers will probably be overloaded if all traffic is shifted there. TPB is currently using eight servers for their trackers. According to the researchers, even trackerless torrents using the DHT protocol will face problems: 'One bug in a DHT sorting routine ensures that it can only "stumble upon success", meaning torrent downloads will not start in seconds or minutes if Pirate Bay goes down in flames.'"
