The State of Ruby VMs — Ruby Renaissance 89

igrigorik writes "In the short span of just a couple of years, the Ruby VM space has evolved to more than just a handful of choices: MRI, JRuby, IronRuby, MacRuby, Rubinius, MagLev, REE and BlueRuby. Four of these VMs will hit 1.0 status in the upcoming year and will open up entirely new possibilities for the language — Mac apps via MacRuby, Ruby in the browser via Silverlight, object persistence via Smalltalk VM, and so forth. This article takes a detailed look at the past year, the progress of each project, and where the community is heading. It's an exciting time to be a Rubyist."

New Attack Fells Internet Explorer 202

alphadogg writes "Attack code has been identified that could be used to break into a PC running older versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. The code was posted Friday to the Bugtraq mailing list by an unidentified hacker. According to security vendor Symantec, the code does not always work properly, but it could be used to install unauthorized software on a victim's computer."

Amen to that. Instead on focusing on the latest and greatest fad, new developers should try to do the following: Learn the craft, not only the tools. A little of algorithmic complexity and data structures won't kill you. Throw a little math for good measure. Abstraction and modularization is the key for good architectures, it does not matter if you prefer procedural, functional or object oriented techniques. Just my 2 cents.

Comment Re:KDE 4 is a downgrade (Score 5, Insightful) 869

It seems that nobody remembers the transition between KDE 1 and KDE 2. KDE 2 was a major redesign over the 1 series, and at the beginning had the same issues that KDE 4 right now has. But eventually it grew up into the beautiful 3.5 series. So I think we'll have what we're expecting from KDE 4 around 4.5 version. Go KDE! Just my 2 cents.

Genetically Engineered Mouse is Not Scared of Cats 286

Gary writes "A team from the University of Tokyo has genetically engineered a mouse that does not fear cats. By tweaking genes to disable certain functions of the olfactory bulb (the area of the brain that receives information about smells directly from olfactory receptors in the nose) the researchers were able to create a 'fearless' mouse that does not try to flee when it smells cats, foxes and other predators. 'The research suggests that the mechanism by which mammals determine whether or not to fear another animal they smell -- and whether or not to flee -- is not a higher-order cerebral function. Instead, that decision is made based on a lower-order function that is hardwired into the neural circuitry of the olfactory bulb.'"

Submission + - Adult MySpace User Drives Teen To Suicide (stltoday.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A young girl from Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, met who she thought was a sympathetic boy on MySpace. However, things turned ugly when her "boyfriend" suddenly turned on her, spreading nasty rumors and eventually telling her, "Everybody in O'Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a shitty rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you," and driving the girl to suicide. However, her parents were later shocked to discover that he boy had never existed — he was the online persona of a neighbor and family friend, who was using the fake MySpace profile to see what people were saying about her daughter. The daughter was a former friend of the suicide victim.
