Where was this discussion when I was beating my head in to a wall trying to pick up Linux back in '96 and the standard answer was "RTFM a$$hole"? The manual assumed you had familiarity with the operating system that you didn't have.

And there you are. Bigotry comes in all flavors. Somebody will always hate somebody without warrant. Not all Republicans are "Fascist, Warmonger, Hatemonger, Criminal, Deviant, Brain-Dead" but yet you stereotyped them. It's part of the human condition, deal with it. Laws won't fix it either. Everyone knows where the line is and that's harm to another.

Pardon my rant- When is all this crap about "SaaS" and -pardon me while I choke on this over used phrase- "Cloud Computing" going to end? Who in the He11 would want their OS running on someone else's hardware? Who would want their data stored somewhere else? Who would want the possibility of the data overlords going through their stuff? Anybody who opts for this deserves what they get. Why the push to get computing out of the hands of people and in to the hands of people who can manipulate things?

Any system that needs to be secure should never be allowed access to any network that has public access. If remote systems "need" to communicate it should be done via dedicated leased lines. Even better since we are talking utility type SCADA systems here, why not have the utility lay fiber, line of sight microwave or what have you (as long as it is properly encrypted)? This way if the telco gets ganked, the leased lines can't be traversed.

Submission + - Check if you're alive with a text message

andrewm_za writes: South Africa's Department of Home Affairs now encourages citizens to check whether they're deceased, online or by SMS, "to ensure that they have not been fraudulently declared dead on the population register. In an event that a person is registered as Deceased when still alive, they must report with an affidavit from a police station confirming that they are alive." This lack of confidence in their database comes a few years after the online marital status checker which came about after too many people were married to the wrong spouse. Both online checks sorely lack a Turing test.

chareverie writes: "In a column Chuck Norris wrote for WorldNetDaily, Chuck Norris asserts that if Texas were to secede from the Union, that he may run to be the president of Texas. Norris writes, "That need may be a reality sooner than we think. If not me, someone someday may again be running for president of the Lone Star state, if the state of the union continues to turn into the enemy of the state" and "Anyone who has been around Texas for any length of time knows exactly what we'd do if the going got rough in America. Let there be no doubt about that.""

Sharks to Arms writes: The 15ft saltwater crocodile began to eat the shark only metres from a boat of fisherman. Craig Van Lawick was aboard the commercial barramundi boat on the Wildman River, east of Darwin, in the Northern Territory when the crocodile started eating the shark.

Submission + - Sergey Brin was a Game Show God

theodp writes: "Almost a decade before Woz debuted on Dancing With the Stars, Google founder Sergey Brin was a game show God. Making an appearance in 2001 on the John O'Hurley-hosted "To Tell The Truth," Sergey and two stooges left a "celebrity" panel stumped on the question of Who is...the real GOOGLE GURU? The unanimous pick of the panel and audience was a professional bowler. Why didn't they just do a Google Image Search on their iPhones?"
