Comment Re:Release Some Steam (Score 1) 451

Given that if this thing blows it could do some serious damage to the country, maybe we should start drilling some holes to release some of the pressure. The cheap geothermal energy would be a bonus.

Environmentalists group A won't let you drill.
Environmentalists group B won't let you string power lines from the geothermal plant.
They'll keep it tied up in court until North America is buried 10m deep in ash.

Herschel Spectroscopy of Future Supernova 21

davecl writes "ESA's Herschel Space Telescope has released its first spectroscopic results. These include observations of VYCMa, a star 50 times as massive as the sun and soon to become a supernova, as well as a nearby galaxy, more distant colliding starburst galaxies and a comet in our own solar system. The spectra show more lines than have ever been seen in these objects in the far-infrared and will allow astronomers to work out the detailed chemistry and physics behind star and planet formation as well as the last stages of stellar evolution before VYCMa's eventual collapse into a supernova. More coverage is available at the Herschel Mission Blog, which I run."

"Look, this is a gift. If I must purchase a service plan before walking out with this product, then I will leave it. Now, can I have this product without a service plan or not?"

When I worked retail (Montgomery Wards) way back when, customers tried this line and we would always respond that the plan is transferable.

Now when I visit these stores my response to the sales person is "No thanks, I used to work retail and had to sell those plans". That tends to end the sales push.

To be more specific, I find it illogical to assume that the NSA would require you to provide them with the keys and at the same time let you talk about it.

Perhaps the product is not classified but falls under some sort of export control. Forking over the key is a requirement prior to selling the product outside the USA.
