Voting Machines Routinely Failing Nationwide 237

palegray.net writes "Voting machines in several critical swing states are causing major problems for voters. A Government Accountability Office report and Common Cause election study [PDF] has concluded that major issues identified in the last presidential election have not been corrected, nor have election officials been notified of the problems. How long can we afford to trust our elections to black box voting practices? From the article: 'In Colorado, 20,000 left polling places without voting in 2006 because of crashed computer registration machines and long lines. And this election day, Colorado will have another new registration system.'"

LHC Shut Down By Transformer Malfunction 293

Ortega-Starfire writes "A 30-ton transformer in the Large Hadron Collider malfunctioned, requiring complete replacement on the day the LHC came online. No one at CERN reported any problems, and they only released this data once the Associated Press sent people to investigate rumors of problems. I guess it's hard to just sweep a 30-ton transformer breaking under the rug."

Submission + - Should Apple License OS X 'Mobile'? (blogspot.com)

An anonymous reader writes: This author, hypothesizes that Apple might decide to license OS X for mobile devices. The reason? Unlike 3rd party licensing for PCs, Apple currently has no cell phone sales to cannibalize. Plus, every unit sold would be one less Windows Mobile license, and one more potential customer for the iTunes Music Store.

Submission + - DARPA Turns Moths into Borg / Cyber Spies

ziani writes: At some point in the not-too-distant future, a moth may take flight in the hills of northern Pakistan, and flap towards a suspected terrorist training camp. But this will be no ordinary moth. Inside it will be a computer chip that was implanted when the creature was still a pupa, in the cocoon, meaning that the moth's entire nervous system can be controlled remotely. Get the story here.

Submission + - Fake Meat On The Way (reuters.com)

hankmt writes: "Dutch researchers are attempting to take the pig out of pork by growing the meat in laboratories. While this completely freaks me out, and it would be a nightmare to try and market, it could actually be a good thing. Not only would no animals have to be killed, but all of the waste and greenhouse gasses associated with livestock would be obviated. And, if they can do it cheaply enough, they might even be able to improve the diet of those in poverty."
