Submission + - Printer drivers do police a favour

Kuku_monroe writes: "What happens if you take richard stallman's life and reenact it in a police drama way? Well, that's what a man from Missouri experienced when he found himself without printer drivers.

"There are a few things in this world that thieves need to keep in mind in order to run a successful criminal operation. For example, don't take the cash you just stole from one bank to another bank down the street to have it deposited into your account. Don't steal someone's MacBook and take it to the Apple Store Genius Bar the next day to get help with OS X. And finally, don't steal a drivers' license printer from the DMV, only to call up the manufacturer the next day looking for drivers.""

Submission + - Unreal Tournament 3 Performance Revealed (pcper.com)

Vigile writes: "The Unreal Tournament 3 demo might just be dropping today, but with a launch on the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and even an in-box Linux client it will definitely be one of the best titles out for the holiday. With an early take on the UT3 demo's performance, PC Perspective has posted an article that compares cards from NVIDIA and AMD in both single and dual-GPU configurations to see which are the best performers. It turns out that even mid-range cards are going to be more than capable of playing UT3 at impressive image quality levels."

Submission + - PHP 5.2.3 released (php.net)

the unbeliever writes: "The PHP development team would like to announce the immediate availability of PHP 5.2.3. This release continues to improve the security and the stability of the 5.X branch as well as addressing two regressions introduced by the previous 5.2 releases. These regressions relate to the timeout handling over non-blocking SSL connections and the lack of HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA in certain conditions. All users are encouraged to upgrade to this release. Further details about the PHP 5.2.3 release can be found in the release announcement for 5.2.3, the full list of changes is available in the ChangeLog for PHP 5. b>Security Enhancements and Fixes in PHP 5.2.3:

It's funny. Laugh.

Journal Journal: On Being a Pedestrian in Car Land 1

When you live in a place where the car rules, and car drivers think they're the High Royalty of Turd Island, and you don't drive yourself, you very quickly develop a Traffic Glare. The Traffic Glare, patent pending, is a comprehensive form of non-verbal facial and kinesic communication (consisting partially of extended eye contact, and partially of appropriate facial/physical expression) which clearly notifies menacing drivers that...

...you know they have seen you.

Submission + - HD-DVD decryption key on a T-shirt

airshowfan writes: "It did not take long before someone put the HD-DVD decryption key (those 32 infamous hex digits that the AACS people are trying to censor from the internet) on a T-shirt. So now, like DeCSS before it, you can wear the decryption key proudly on your chest, and add to it a Free Speech message if you choose."

Submission + - Where did the cellphone go?

Jim Adkins writes: "MHW has a brief editorial about today's current multi use cellphones. What I use a cellphone for is to make calls. Period. I am not looking for a phone that acts as a bad MP3 player, a second rate digital camera, a tiny screened wannabe PSP, or any myriad of other uses. What I want from a cellphone is good reception, a rugged frame that can stand rough use like being dropped occasionally, a front screen LCD so I can see who is calling before I answer, and last but not least — long battery life."
