Morphing Metals 121

aarondubrow writes "Imagine a metal that 'remembers' its original, cold-forged shape, and can return to that shape when exposed to heat or a magnetic pulse. Like magic out of a Harry Potter novel, such a metal could contract on command, or swing back and forth like a pendulum. Believe it or not, such metals already exist. First discovered in 1931, they belong to a class of materials called 'shape memory alloys (SMA),' whose unique atomic make-up allows them to return to their initial form, or alternate between forms through a phase change."

Steam Not Coming To Linux 520

dkd903 writes "A rumor has been going around for about four months that Valve was working on a Linux version of Steam and this had a lot of people in the Linux community very excited. But, Valve has now officially killed the rumor. And it is not what people wants to hear – there is no Linux version of Steam in development. Doug Lombardi, the Marketing VP of Valve Corporation, in an interview, has put an end to all the rumors by saying that they are not working on Steam for Linux right now."

Submission + - Justin Bieber tweets hacker's phone number (thinq.co.uk)

Stoobalou writes: Kid-friendly Canadian crooner Justin Bieber got his own back on a hacker who posted his phone number online by reciprocating.

On Saturday night Bieber stuck up a tweet that read “Everyone call me... or text” appending a mobile phone number that wasn't his, but belonged a bloke called Kevin Kristopik, who apparently got hold of Bieber's number by breaking into the Twitter account of one of his chums.

Actually... a recording camera that tracks where I look and uploads videos to youtube of the undertaking, tail-gating, no-warning-lane-changing, accident-causing. road-raing shitty drivers we have to put up with on the roads on a day to day basis.

Failing that, an HUD targetting system with said lasers and missiles will suffice.

Two Unpatched Flaws Show Up In Apple iOS 171

Trailrunner7 writes "The technique that the Jailbreakme.com Web site is using to bypass the iPhone's security mechanisms and enable users to run unapproved apps on their phones involves exploiting two separate vulnerabilities. One of the vulnerabilities is a memory-corruption flaw that affects the way that Apple's mobile devices, including the iPad and iPod Touch, display PDFs. The second weakness is a problem in the Apple iOS kernel that gives an attacker higher privileges once his code is on a targeted device, enabling him to break out of the iOS sandbox. The combination of the two vulnerabilities — both of which are unpatched at the moment — gives an attacker the ability to run remote code on the device and evade the security protections on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The technique became public earlier this week when the Jailbreakme.com site began hosting a set of specially crafted PDF files designed to help users jailbreak their Apple devices and load apps other than the ones approved by Apple and offered in its official App Store."

Google Kills Wave Development 327

We've mentioned several times over the past two years Wave, Google's ambitiously multi-channel, perhaps plain overwhelming entry in the social media wars. Now, reader mordejai writes "Google stated in its official blog that they will not continue developing Wave as a standalone product. It's sad, because it had a lot of potential to improve communications, but Google never promoted it well, denying it a chance to replace email and other collaboration tools for many uses."

VLC 1.1 Forced To Drop Shoutcast Due To AOL Anti-OSS Provision 315

The folks over at VideoLAN are in the process of releasing version 1.1.0 of VLC, and one of the major changes is the removal of SHOUTcast, a media-streaming module from AOL-owned Nullsoft. "During the last year, the VLC developers have received several injunctions by e-mail from employees at AOL, asking us to either comply to a license not compatible with free software or remove the SHOUTcast capability in VLC." Within the license is a clause prohibiting the distribution of SHOUTcast with any product whose own license requires that it be "disclosed or distributed in source code form," "licensed for the purpose of making derivative works," or "redistributable at no charge." The license would also force VideoLAN to bundle Nullsoft adware with VLC. Update: 06/22 00:52 GMT by H : The 1.1 release is ready from their site; you can also read up on the release information.

US Air Force To Suffer From PS3 Update 349

tlhIngan writes "The US Air Force, having purchased PS3s for supercomputing research, is now the latest victim of Sony's removal of the Install Other OS feature. It turns out that while their PS3s don't need the firmware update, it will be impossible to replace PS3s that fail. PS3s with the Other OS feature are no longer produced since the Slim was introduced, so replacements will have to come from the existing stock of used PS3s. However, as most gamers have probably updated their PS3s, that used stock is no longer suitable for the USAF's research. In addition, smaller educational clusters using PS3s will share the same fate — unable to replace machines that die in their clusters." In related news, Sony has been hit with two more lawsuits over this issue.

Submission + - European Commission Approves Orange/T-Mobile Merge (gadgetforecast.com)

gadgetforecast.com writes: The proposed merger between Orange and T-Mobile in the UK has been given the go-ahead by the European Commission. However, approval comes with a price, namely that 3 UK gain access to 3000 mast sites to help them expand their 3G coverage. The Office of Fair Trading in the UK had had som qualms over the merger, worrying that it would seriously dampen competition in the British telecommunications industry. Those fears are obviously not shared by the EU, which stipulated the access to more masts for 3 and 25% of the 1800 MHz spectrum to be offered to competitors for use with mobile broadband. The merger thus looks set to go ahead although for the time being customers probably won’t see much difference with both brands continuing to be used, at least for the foreseeable future.

Submission + - UK Digital Economy Bill adds website blocking (computerworlduk.com)

superapecommando writes: The government has amended the Digital Economy Bill to give High Court judges the power to block any website with a "substantial" amount of copyright infringing content, such as YouTube.
The House of Lords passed the amendment to the controversial Clause 17, which last year raised concerns as it allows the Secretary of State to adjust copyright law in a bid to keep up with technological advances. At the time, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) defended Clause 17, saying it ensured the government could act if illegal downloaders develop new ways of obtaining material in the future.

Submission + - I useTwitter, so Please Rob Me (itpro.co.uk)

nk497 writes: Developers looking to prove a point about the information people are sharing on social networking sites has unveiled a new tool called Please Rob Me. It hunts out tweets from people who are also using location-based services telling the world that they're out of town, and then directs the world to go rob their house. The creators of the site said: "Don't get us wrong, we love the whole location-aware thing. The information is very interesting and can be used to create some pretty awesome applications. However, the way in which people are stimulated to participate in sharing this information, is less awesome." How long until the first actual robbery takes place?
