"If some stupid old lady spills lukewarm coffee into her lap, she should NOT get a billion dollars in damages."

Third degree burns on 6% of her body, lesser burns on a further 16% of her body (that is almost a quarter of her body burned), 8 days in hospital, a skin graft and 2 years of further medical care is far from frivolous. I'd argue that any beverage that has the potential to cause injuries serious enough to require a skin graft is slightly beyond "lukewarm".

Possible Treatment For Ebola 157

RedEaredSlider writes "Researchers at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases have found a class of drugs that could provide treatment for Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever. The new drugs are called 'antisense' compounds, and they allow the immune system to attack the viruses before they can do enough damage to kill the patient. Travis Warren, research scientist at USAMRIID, said while the work is still preliminary -— the drugs have been tested only on primates — the results are so far promising. In the case of Ebola, five of eight monkeys infected with the virus lived, and with Marburg, all survived. The drugs were developed as part of a program to deal with possible bioterrorist threats, in partnership with AVI Biopharma."

Pedant.

If a non-Australian asks me where I live I will say Sydney. If I am referring to Sydney it could also mean just "The City" or "The CBD", or the entire metropolitan area. If I wanted to makes sure someone knew I meant the whole of the Sydney Metropolitan Area, I would say "Sydney Metropolitan Area". I might even reply with the name of the suburb I live in if I wanted to be more specific, or even the area "The Northern Beaches" if I wanted to be less specific about where I lived, but more specific than, say, just "Sydney". However, "I live in Sydney" is a factually correct statement. In fact my postal address does not even include "Sydney" in it.

When I was in Vietnam, everyone referred to the biggest city there as Saigon.

Maybe the actors will have to lower their expectations. They can say "I want $20 million" as much as they want, but if the market cannot stand it, they cannot be paid it.
