Comment Selling photos? Not the real problem... (Score 1) 234

Everyone is concentrating the possibility that Instagram might sell or otherwise make a profit on content uploaded to the service. That is nothing compared to this:

You represent and warrant that: (i) you own the Content posted by you on or through the Service or otherwise have the right to grant the rights and licenses set forth in these Terms of Use; (ii) the posting and use of your Content on or through the Service does not violate, misappropriate or infringe on the rights of any third party, including, without limitation, privacy rights, publicity rights, copyrights, trademark and/or other intellectual property rights; (iii) you agree to pay for all royalties, fees, and any other monies owed by reason of Content you post on or through the Service ; and (iv) you have the legal right and capacity to enter into these Terms of Use in your jurisdiction.

One should realize the bold part of the text above means that if Instagram uses the content that you upload in any way that incurs fees of any sort, YOU get to pay the fees. So forget about the fact that Instagram might use your photos to make a profit. Any fees that end up being owed will be paid by YOU. Pull out your checkbooks, everyone!

I like Slashdot. Frequently, there's interesting, if not somewhat bizarre, discussions on this site. Plus there are quite a few highly educated people who hang out here and throw in some interesting comments now and then. But Slashdot is not (at least to date) a news site. It's more of a tabloid. Not to say that there is anything wrong with that but to use Slashdot as a source of serious information? Not unless serious vetting takes place for the stories posted here.

Best reason I have heard for NOT sending money to the federal government. The federal government, in many many cases, is simply overhead. If it were a business (as our republican friends think it should be), it would be trimmed down and the redundant services between states and federal government would be eliminated (with the states taking priority as the Constitution implies). I'm not even a republican and I would support such changes wholeheartedly.

To send money to the federal government, only to have that money sent back to the states (with conditions attached), is wasteful, supports corruption at the federal level, and empowers special interests. It's time to start putting the federal government back in the hands of the citizens, don't you think?
