Hand Written Clock 86

a3buster writes "This clock does not actually have a man inside, but a flatscreen that plays a 24-hour loop of this video by the artist watching his own clock somewhere and painstakingly erasing and re-writing each minute. This video was taken at Design Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009."

Dell Rugged Laptops Not Quite Tough Enough 225

An anonymous reader writes "Trusted Reviews has put the new Dell XFR rugged laptop through the grinder and it hasn't fared as well as expected. Considering that these guys drove a car over a Panasonic Toughbook, they went pretty easy on the Dell, but it still couldn't take the punishment. It looks like Dell still has a way to go to steal the ball from Panasonic when it comes to all terrain computing."

Bacteria Could Survive In Martian Soil 90

Dagondanum writes "Multiple missions have been sent to Mars with the hopes of testing the surface of the planet for life — or the conditions that could create life. The question of whether life in the form of bacteria (or something even more exotic) exists on Mars is hotly debated, and still lacks a definitive yes or no. Experiments done right here on Earth that simulate the conditions on Mars and their effects on terrestrial bacteria show that it is entirely possible for certain strains of bacteria to weather the harsh environment of Mars." Perhaps this is something that will be tested further in a few years by the Mars Science Lab, also known as "Curiosity" and (as reader Nova1021 points out) "the Mars Action Hero."

US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal 490

theodp writes "Many US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find identical pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. The same message is also echoed by private schools, such as John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago."

Submission + - New bridge but no new directions

loVolt writes: Here in lotus land (Vancouver BC) we got a new bridge!
It's been in our news for weeks and you think the Pope himself
opened it up by the media coverage..Described as the biggest thing
to happen in the lower mainland in 50 years.

Today I'm looking for directions it's opening day..but neither Google maps
or Mapquest ..I know they must be busy but you'd think a "new bridge"
would/should be added to map directions in real time, and who should inform
the online map companies of map changes?

ldap access to storage helped sort out who could put what ..where. The implementation took a bit of
time to get the original files files into right locations, but it's easyer to manage now.

We have a "cooperate strategy" this year to update and maintain blogs, other then management's commitment to the work required ... lets just say that if it's not in the staffs department reviews..it's not getting done. *g* Frankly scarlet ...
