zacharye writes: Using nothing more than a few common tools, hackers can reportedly recover credit card numbers and other personal information from used Xbox 360 consoles even after they have been restored to factory settings. Researchers at Drexel University say they have successfully recovered sensitive personal data from a used Xbox console, and they claim Microsoft is doing a disservice to users by not taking precautions to secure their data. ”Microsoft does a great job of protecting their proprietary information,” researcher Ashley Podhradsky said...

neokushan writes: The Company I work for has recently, at my behest, decided it was time to update the documentation for their software. The problem is, the documentation is so out of date and inconsistent that it needs a complete rewrite. Ideally, we could do with a Help Authoring Tool, but the company isn't large enough to justify the spend on something like Adobe RoboHelp. Sadly, FOSS solutions are extremely lacking. What does everyone else use? Are there any cheap, or better yet, free HATs out there worth using? How do they compare to the likes of Robohelp?

His team has 14 days to appeal to the Supreme Court — but would have to show a "wider issue of public importance" to justify such an appeal. But Thats the Problem with election Machines, or E-Voting.
You can't know. You can't Recount. You don't know the source. YOU CAN NOT VERYFY.
This is why e-voting undermines the base of democracy.
What we need is a competition for voting macines, like for encryption http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard. To declare an open standard after the worlds brightest securtiy people tried 4-8 years to break it.
Oh, and Voting over the Internet or by text messaging? I can think of so many things that can go wrong that it should be illegal.

From the article: 'According to a Cornell University study, unattractive defendants are 22 percent more likely to be convicted than good-looking ones. And the unattractive also get slapped with harsher sentences — an average of 22 months longer in prison.'"

Writer Peter Watts Sentenced; No Jail Time 299

shadowbearer writes "SF writer Peter Watts, a Canadian citizen, whose story we have read about before in these pages, was sentenced three days ago in a Port Huron, MI court. There's not a lot of detail in the story, and although he is still being treated like a terrorist (cannot enter or pass through the US, DNA samples) he was not ordered to do any time in jail, was freed, and has returned home to his family. The judge in the case was, I believe, as sympathetic as the legal system would allow him to be."

gamebittk writes: James Harrison, 74, has an antibody in his plasma that stops babies dying from Rhesus disease, a form of severe anaemia. He has donated 984 times since he was 18 years old, saving an estimated 2.2 million babies so far. He made a pledge to be a donor aged 14 after undergoing major chest surgery in which he needed 13 litres of blood.
