Submission + - Super Bowl Web site hacked, Seeded with Exploits

Adri00la writes: "ZDNet is reporting that the official Web site of Dolphin Stadium, home of Sunday's Super Bowl XLI, has been hacked and seeded with exploit code targeting two known Windows security flaws. In the attack, the server hosting the site was breached and a link to a malicious JavaScript file was inserted into the header of the front page of the site. Visitors to the site execute the script, which attempts to exploit the vulnerabilities to load keyloggers/backdoors."

Croakyvoice writes: The Creators of XenoGC a gamecube modchip have announced that they are releasing WiiKey — an Upgradeable Wii Modchip that has full support for Gamecube and Wii Homebrew, can play games from any region and more worryingly for the likes of Nintendo, it can play backups of Gamecube and Nintendo Wii games.

Submission + - Virgins Wanted

An anonymous reader writes: When you think of Paris Hilton and Jenna Jameson, the last thing you probably think is ... virgins. Famed on-camera sexhibitionists Hilton and Jameson are to participate in a reality show currently in production called "Virgin Territory," in which a group of the uninitiated will find their way to the promised land. To help stock his TV larder, Executive Producer Kevin Blatt will be unveiling giant billboards in Times Square and Los Angeles; soliciting actual, live virgins in those cities. "Finding virgins in NYC or Los Angeles is no easy task," says Blatt. http://www.virginterritorytheshow.com/

Submission + - Second Life land-owner regrets DMCA complaint

An anonymous reader writes: Guntram Graef, who along with his wife runs Anshe Chung Studios (Second Life's biggest land owner) says that he regrets filing the DMCA complaint which looked to challenge the right of the press to publish images originating from the virtual world. The take-down notice was first filed after a video surfaced on YouTube depicting a 'griefing attack' in which Ailin Graef's avatar (Anshe Chung) was attacked by animated flying penises while being interviewed by CNET news in their Second Life bureau last month. Now Graef says that the take-down notices were never really about copyright but were intended to stop the humiliation and alleged defamation of his wife Ailin.
Google

Submission + - The thing that cannot be Googled

tetsuo29 writes: So, I'm dissecting a Perl script that a co-worker wrote and not being very familiar with Perl, I have no idea yet what the line "$| = 1;" means. In trying to google for it, I've discovered that "$|" cannot be searched for by Google. Try it. It doesn't even return the standard page that says:

Your search — "[search terms]" — did not match any documents

Suggestions:

        * Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
        * Try different keywords.
        * Try more general keywords.

The results page is the equivalent of Google nothingness. Now, I think that "$|" is somehow related to CGI.pm and therefore probably CGI in general, but still shouldn't the brilliant coders at Google be able to code for this and index this as a search term so that clueless dolts like me can google for it to find out what it means?

So, I ask you Slashdotters:

    * What does '$| = 1;' mean in Perl?
    * Is there a way to google for that term?
    * Has anyone else found any text that Google will return 'Google nothingness' as I've described it?

Submission + - All-time Best Arcade Games You've Never Played

TomSlick writes: Harold, posting at Fanpop, found himself dissatisfied with the same old "Best Video Games" lists, and decided to put together a true list of all time greatest arcade games. His inclusion of Heavy Barrel, Gyruss, and Xybots, makes this one of the greatest lists ever published. As he says, "These are the games that, had I room, I would purchase and rebuild for a home arcade, as I wouldn't get tired of playing any of them."
Music

Submission + - Custom Love Songs

An anonymous reader writes: Springwise.com has an interesting review of TailoredMusic.com, a website that offers user-customizable music. Customers go on the website, choose a song, and re-write the lyrics. On the backend, a small army of musicians re-record each song and deliver the results via MP3, WAV, and CD formats. The company is based on the belief that music is headed towards a services approach (rather than CD/download sales). Could this be the answer to those who are saying musicians need a new business model? The product approach for music does seem to be suffering lately.

Submission + - Texas County to Iris-scan Al Children

An anonymous reader writes: I actually like Texas, generally, but sometimes they seem like a great big bunch of freaks. This article on a "Safety Project" talks about how some county wants to use nifty technology from their prisons (a boom industry down there, I'm told) to track ALL children. They promise to delete the database records once the kids turn 18, so they claim there's no privacy issue.

Submission + - Learn 10 good UNIX usage habits

An anonymous reader writes: Adopt 10 good habits that improve your UNIX command line efficiency — and break away from bad usage patterns in the process. This article takes you step-by-step through several good, but too often neglected, techniques for command-line operations. Learn about common errors and how to overcome them, so you can learn exactly why these UNIX habits are worth picking up.

Submission + - "Aren't Routers Boring?" the developer ask

boyko.at.netqos writes: "I've just put together an article for Network Performance Daily on the relationship between developers and network guys. The premise is summed up in this excerpt: "On the other hand, some members of DZone's development community had complained — fairly, in my opinion — that much of what we wrote didn't really affect developers. Although we got back on their front page again... DZone has mostly remained a bit aloof to our offerings — and who can blame them? So we asked one of their editors, Lowell Heddings, how we could better serve the DZone community (and by extension, the developer community.) He had this to say: "My main question for network engineers is... aren't routers boring? =P" I'm pretty sure he was trying to blow us off. But he's got a point. Aren't routers boring? So I actually posed this question in a company-wide e-mail...""

Submission + - Microsoft publishes free XBox development tools

prostoalex writes: "Microsoft announced the release of free XNA Game Studio Express tool for developing C# games that run on both Windows and XBox. They're also selling XNA Creators Club subscriptions, which, similar to MSDN subscriptions, offer access to sample code and additional documentation. Also, Microsoft is explicitly aiming towards uniting the Windows and XBox development platforms: "You will have to compile the game once for each platform. In this release simply create a separate project for each platform and then compile them both. Our goal is to allow as much code as possible to be shared between those two projects, allowing you to use the same source files in both projects, but platform-specific code will need to be conditionally-compiled.""

Sony Adds PS3 Support to Linux Kernel 181

mu22le writes "A few Sony patches to the Linux kernel have just been merged in the mainline tree, to be included in the 2.6.20 release. The patches add 'core platform support for the PS3 game console and other devices using the PS3 hypervisor.'" From the Linux Devices article: "Linux gained generic support for the Cell processor, on which the PS3 is based, with the 2.6.13 release in June of 2005. The new Sony-contributed patches to the 2.6.20 kernel appear to add machine-specific support for technology such as the PS3's memory architecture, DMA (direct memory access) model, and SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) model. A Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) distribution has been available for the PS3 since October, thanks to a development deal between Sony and YDL publisher TerraSoft. However, YDL so far has not been bundled with early PS3 shipments, despite earlier indications from Sony Entertainment's CEO, Ken Kuturagi."
