Hyram Graff writes: "The distributed computing project Seventeen or Bust has found the tenth largest known prime. The 2,116,617 digit number, 33661*2^7031232+1, was found as part of the projects attempt to prove that 78,557 is the smallest Serpenski number. 33661 is the eleventh of seventeen canidates to be busted."

willatnewscientist writes: "Alex Smith, who is studying electronics and computing at the University of Birmingham, UK, has proved that a cellular automata that uses just three in its calculations is the simplest possible universal Turing machine. Smith showed that it is equivalent to another mathematical device already known to be a universal computer. That link, in addition to the usual 'dramatic breakthrough' material, has an amazing flash banner that simultaneously shows a thousand mathematical demonstrations all at once. The animations came from the Wolfram Demonstrations Project, a free service with 1200+ dynamically interactive examples of math, science, and physics, all with code. For the product itself, much is new or improved, with built-in math databases, improved visualizations, and more."
