Jetman Attempts Intercontinental Flight 140

Last year we ran the story of Yves Rossy and his DIY jetwings. Yves spent $190,000 and countless hours building a set of jet-powered wings which he used to cross the English Channel. Rossy's next goal is to cross the Strait of Gibraltar, from Tangier in Morocco and Tarifa on the southwestern tip of Spain. From the article: "Using a four-cylinder jet pack and carbon fibre wings spanning over 8ft, he will jump out of a plane at 6,500 ft and cruise at 130 mph until he reaches the Spanish coast, when he will parachute to earth." Update 18:57 GMT: mytrip writes: "Yves Rossy took off from Tangiers but five minutes into an expected 15-minute flight he was obliged to ditch into the wind-swept waters."

Regardless if it's "wrong" to use company assets for personal use. I think everyone's missing the point here. The "social media director" (geez where can I find a meaningless do-nothing job like that!) crossed the privacy line even if the moron posted it twice. That's what moderators do - edit and remove trolls - why he felt he had some moral obligation to inform this school of this misdeed is beyond me. Last time I checked, humans were not perfect and to use the "well he loses all of his rights when he walks into the workplace" argument doesn't wash with me in this case. This guy seems like some narcissistic asshole to me that "wanted to get even".

Submission + - Intel refreshes 80 core super chip (techworld.com)

superapecommando writes: Nearly two years after unveiling its experimental 80 core chip, Intel is getting ready to show off its next incarnation of a high-powered, energy efficient many-core research chip.
Intel is developing a many-core chip designed to dramatically improve energy efficiency in the data centre and for the cloud, according to Justin Rattner, CTO and senior Intel fellow. Intel plans to unveil the research chip before the end of the year, he said.
Rattner told us the company plans to unveil the new chip before the end of the year. The chip, which is experimental and not commercially ready, has a "completely new design" and a high core count. While the last experimental chip had 80 cores, Rattner said this one won't necessarily have the same number, but it will have many more cores than chips currently on the market.

...Clean coal and clean air is the real solution, but destroying any R&D, even for a temp-solution, is definitely not a solution.

There is no such thing as "Clean Coal" and if you think the current administration will not realize this think again: Big coal was a major contributor to Obama from early on in his political career.

Hoover,L Ron writes: If you're going to have your PC fixed by the "Agents" at Geek Squad (located at most Best Buy stores) make sure you back up and DOD wipe your porn collection. For it seems as though they like to take a peek. From the article:"

"...In recent months, allegations of agents copying pornography, music and alluring photos from customers' computers have circulated on the Internet. Some bloggers now call it the "Peek Squad."Any attractive young woman who drops off her computer with the Geek Squad should assume that her photos will be looked at," said Brett Haddock, a former Geek Squad technician."

Submission + - One General Admin to Manage 10 TB

roj3 writes: eWeek is reporting on a trend toward simplification in the datacenter. Test center analyst Victor Loh writes: "Now, vendors including Compellent, EMC and Hewlett-Packard are simplifying buying decisions for IT managers by packaging [NAS, SAN, iSCSI and data protection products] together or offering them as add-ons as part of a unified product line. ...Smaller organizations [less than 250 employees] moving from DAS (direct-attached storage) to networked storage can now often do so without any specialized storage expertise." How much storage should an organization have before hiring a full-time data storage admin?
