Thin Water Acts Like a Solid 138

Roland Piquepaille writes "What happens when you compress water in a nano-sized space? According to Georgia Tech physicists, water starts to behave like a solid. "The confined water film behaves like a solid in the vertical direction by forming layers parallel to the confining surface, while maintaining it's liquidity in the horizontal direction where it can flow out," said one of the researchers. "Water is a wonderful lubricant, but it flows too easily for many applications. At the one nanometer scale, water is a viscous fluid and could be a much better lubricant," added another one."

Submission + - Canada to Ban Incandescent Bulbs by 2012

Radon360 writes: Canada will ban the sale of inefficient incandescent light bulbs by 2012 as part of a plan to cut down on emissions of greenhouse gases. Canada is the second country in the world to announce such a ban. Australia said in February it would get rid of all incandescent bulbs by 2009. The ban will not apply to uses where incandescent bulbs are still the only practical alternative.

Feed Review: InDesign CS3 (macworld.com)

Despite a few wrinkles and omissions, InDesign remains the most capable page layout software available. The more I use this new version, the more I appreciate the subtle retooling throughout, not just the obvious new features. InDesign CS3 is an upgrade that you'll grow to like.

Submission + - What is cancer?

gerexs writes: "Cancer is a kind of disease characterized by uncontrolled division of cells and the ability of these cells to invade other tissues, either by direct growth into its neighbor tissue or by implantation into distant sites by metastasis. A process called staging helps in assessing the prognosis and in determining the most appropriate treatment to the unrestrained growth of cancer cells. It is used by physicians to describe the extent of spread of a cancer. In this system, cancer is being classified into four stages. Stage I — there's no involvement of lymph nodes and no spread of the cancer from metastases or its original site. Stage IV — the advance cancer, with both distant metastases and lymph node involvement."

For the best part of the last two years, I've accessed Usenet news by running slrn on my dedicated server, hosted at ThePlanet in Dallas. The server 'news.theplanet.com' happily served me via NNTP.
