We can easily reach a compromise between Democrats and Republicans on this matter. The answer? Make guns illegal and get rid of welfare and other entitlements. Then the poor people can't rise up and destroy you, because they can't get guns, while the government is still heavily armed with non-lethal weaponry. (That's me being facetious, for those who cannot detect it).

I have mod points, but I want to chime in on this topic because I'm in the field and I know what the job market wants.

Here is what you do:
Find a University with a Software Engineering program. Software Engineers are in such high demand there are more jobs available for them than there are applicants. Computer Science more like an extension of Math. If you like Math, then ComS is fine, but if you just want to program, you'll find yourself selling yourself short with a typical ComS education.

Next, find out the prerequisite classes for your Software Engineering core classes. Get as much done as you can at a community college. Ask the University if they'll take 3 credits from community college class X as valid for their own Introduction to C/C++ programming class. Do this with every class you take.

Spend 2 years at the University. Generally, you can only transfer in half your credits for B.S. in Software Engineering to the University. Look and see if you're already there.

As a former professor of mine said, "Know your shit." Do an internship or go to a job interview, be nicely dressed, and choose a company you want to work for. That's right, you get to choose where you want to work, rather than taking whatever job is available at companies X, Y, and Z.

Good Luck.

If you have the capability, a few simple changes in config files and you be running in X11 with an xterm at log on.

As a child in a medical type family, let me first say to you: Never, ever ask a secretary, head nurse, or anyone else for anything like that. Go straight to the doctor. The doctors have all the power and their subordinates like to think they do.

The doctors know the rules, and if you had just gone to the doctor and asked, there should have been no problem. However, since you asked someone who either (a) did not know how to get the records, (b) did not know if they had the authority to give the records, or (c) you've just made the women's life a lot more complicated, because if she gives you the records herself she may be fired and/or sued. Don't even ask a technician for the results, they probably won't tell you for fear of being disciplined.

Basically, you asked the wrong person for the right information. Always ask the doctor––they can get it to you. He/she ordered the test, he/she is on the top of the totem pole, and he/she can do whatever the hell they want because they have passed board exams, medical school, and have M.D. after their name.

That said, the lady was stupid for not having a nurse ask the doctor about the issue. As to your manner, there are some good posts above that highlight the benefits of not being a dick.

Let me explain the license in simple slashdot terms:

1. The license was penned by Microsoft, therefore it is evil.
2. Pixar is releasing the code. Pixar was financed by Steve Jobs into a multi-billion dollar corporation. Corporations and Steve Jobs are evil, therefore the only logical thing to conclude about Pixar's intentions is that they are evil.
3. The license is not GPL, or some similar Google license, so it is patent encumbered. Patents are evil, so the code is evil.
4. Any open source code should be GPLv3 because RMS says so, therefore the everything about this code dump is designed to embrace, extend, and extinguish s some already existing but half done FOSS alternative. That is evil.

How could this code and its license be any more evil? I've just proved to you that this whole thing is like the spawn of Satan––or Blizzard entertainment, 'cause they can't fix Diablo III.

Ask yourself if you really want to do computer science or if you want to program for a living. If you want to program get a Software Engineering degree instead. Too many people go into computer science thinking that's how they learn to program and made lots of money. If you want to solve scientific problems, be a computer scientist. If you want to be a developer, go for software engineering.

My advice to you––and I pray that you read it––is change your major and go for Software Engineering. You sound like you want to be a developer. None of my Engineering friends, especially SW Engineering, have had any trouble getting a job. The degree is fairly new, so you may have to switch to a different school, but it pays big after you graduate.

Don't fall into the trap where you think "Programming" == "Computer Science." So many people do, and I cringe every time I see it happen. Decide what you want to do and get the right specialization for the job. Call employers and ask them what they'd rather have, a CS or a Software Engineer.

Above all, follow your heart and be open to new ideas––remember, there is a place for everything, and it's called college.

A common cause of insomnia in depressed people is directly related to the medication(s) they take. Often times, those mess up your whole sleep cycle.

Also, you tend to want to rest more during daytime, so there's a vicious cycle where you don't sleep because you took a nap in the afternoon. Staying active is very important to mental health, just as it is to not being CowboyNeal.

People might think this is a troll, but they would be wrong. Android has too many bugs, too little polish, things not sorted out like they should be.

Examples:
-DatePicker/TimePicker Listeners (Who came up with their implementations?)
-Layouts that don't compare with the fine grained control Apple's interface builder gives you on tablets
-4.0.3 is a step in the right direction, but there is functionality missing like a calendar-based DayView class.
-Emulator is slow, google pulled x86 acceleration from AVD for some reason

Android succeeded because it is free. Using the software doesn't cost the carriers lots of money, unless you count the skimming by companies like Microsoft. Apple wouldn't license iOS, and they probably never will––else nearly all phones would be some variant of iOS.

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Is a good GPA vital to landing a tech job? 1

RhapsodyGuru writes: Given the rather tough job market as of late, I have always wondered about the possibility that I might be excluded from many job offers over my close-but-no-cigar GPA in undergrad. Currently, I am a communications major with a 3.25 major GPA and a 2.8 cumulative GPA. However, unlike the typical college student, I have quite an array of different job experiences and a relatively healthy looking resume. For example, I have worked for a nuclear power plant designer company for nearly two and a half years, wrote for my local city newspaper with a circulation of 10,000ish, and have worked numerous side jobs related to tech such as software test and IT technician. My question is, despite a certain job I want to apply for (in database administration) asking for a minimum GPA of a 3.0, will it really matter to job recruiters that my performance was middling in college, but I have a great job history with excellent references to back it up? How could I put positive spin on what I have done in a way that could appeal to a interviewer?

No country would want to do that, especially if it controls critical infrastructure. The US had no obligation to share the Internet with anyone else.
