Submission + - RIAA Awarded $222,000 in Copyright-Infringement Ca (wired.com)

AikonMGB writes: "From Wired:

DULUTH, Minnesota — Jammie Thomas, a single mother of two, was found liable Thursday for copyright infringement in the nation's first file-sharing case to go before a jury. Twelve jurors here said the Minnesota woman must pay $9,250 for each of 24 shared songs that were the subject of the lawsuit, amounting to $222,000 in penalties.
[...]
"This is what can happen if you don't settle," RIAA attorney Richard Gabriel told reporters outside the courthouse. "I think we have sent a message we are willing to go to trial."
[...]
The case, however, did set legal precedents favoring the industry. In proving liability, the industry did not have to demonstrate that the defendant's computer had a file-sharing program installed at the time that they inspected her hard drive. And the RIAA did not have to show that the defendant was at the keyboard when RIAA investigators accessed Thomas' share folder.

Submission + - Firefox Focus Means New Home for Thunderbird (mozillazine.org)

An anonymous reader writes: MozillaZine is reporting that Mozilla Thunderbird is to find a new home. The Mozilla Foundation's increasing focus on Firefox and the "open Web" means that Thunderbird has been neglected and the decision has been made that a more autonomous arrangement would be suitable, allowing the Mozilla Foundation and Mozilla Corporation to concentrate on Firefox. Three options are proposed for Thunderbird: a entirely new foundation, a new Mozilla Foundation subsidiary or a SeaMonkey-style community project backed by a "small independent services and consulting company". Currently option three seems to be the favourite among the Thunderbird team.

Submission + - Lucas making 2 more live-action Star Wars movies

ejbvanc writes: "According to Fox News

Lucas, by the way, says he is readying "Clone Wars," an animated series for TV that's derived from "Star Wars." Many "Star Wars" characters appear in "Clone Wars," but voiced by other actors.

And here's a little news: Lucas tells me he will make two more live-action films based in the "Star Wars" era.

"But they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters," he said. "They will be other people of that milieu."

The two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each. But, like "Clone Wars," Lucas doesn't know where on TV they will land.

Lets see if George can ruin the original trilogy for me anymore.... please...."

Submission + - Microsoft Considering Folding@home

Anonymous Coward writes: "Xbox 360 boss Peter Moore has hinted that the company may considering pursuing a similar project to the Playstation 3's Folding@home service for their latest home console, Xbox 360. "If we truly believe that we can in some way marshal the resources of a much larger installed base of Xbox 360 owners, with a processor that's of equal power to the PS3, then you have my commitment that we'll look at that", Moore told The Mercury News."
