Comment Is slashdot deleting posts now? (Score -1) 385

I have been having this problem for weeks now. Whatever you responded to is not shown to me. I have the sliders slid over to show me everything and yet whoever you were talking to is not known to me. Because your post is rated quite high I'd love to see what was said but I can't. Is that new little flag in the corner responsible and if so when did it become OK on /. to censor information? Anyone else having this issue?

Comment Lack of paragraphs??? (Score -1) 944

All your respondents seem to be able to come up with to counter your argument is your lack of paragraphs! Indeed they first ignore you then RIDICULE you. Looks like you will win after all. You sir, however little it may matter, have been added to my friends list. I'd like to hear more of what you say. Be wary though, following your a fore mentioned formula get ready for the attacks! They might start calling you nasty things like poopyhead! +5 Intelligent. MOD THIS GUY UP!

Comment What about us non-groupthinkers? (Score -1) 763

Really? I have a brash writing style. I speak clearly, plainly, and simply. My opinions are often unpopular and often against the groupthink (I AM an antisocial nerd after all). That's the best part about /. and what I love most. I can say what I want and it isn't gonna get deleted. That is also the worst part. My karma has been terrible since about 2003. Is it because I troll? Am I posting GNAA ads? Hardly. I haven't posted a purposefully derogatory comment since the post that got me Terrible karma (which was a jab at some mac zealots). My comments may contain graphic language but you're all big boys (or girls) right? We all have to grow up sometime and I have. But my karma would make you think otherwise. The karma problem is alot like the poverty problem out in real life. Once you're down here at the bottom no one listens anymore and your posts are limited to 2 a day I think. No one hears me and hence no one mods me up. So much for getting yourself out of the hole. But hey I guess you'd be one of those folks who would also tell me to stop being poor and pull myself up by my boot straps. I've watched you post for years. I've even responded to quite a few of them but you'd never know because I have to do it AC. I contribute as much to this site as you, Kjella, garcia, Sycraft-fu, eldavojohn, Red Flayer, Jaysyn, NYCL or any of the other /. big names. I need a better way to fix my karma and there simply is no way to do that. As it is I'd have to join the groupthink, act like a yes man, and kiss some butt to get modded. Much like in real life. That just isn't the kind of guy I am. I'm also not the kind of person that if I don't get my way I go complaining to the admins as you also suggest. I fix things my own way but since the admins are asking, I'm telling them. I NEED BETTER TOOLS. It's 2011. You wouldn't ask me to program /. from a C64 or build a jet engine with just a hammer and screw driver. Let's try to solve this in a better manner than relying on people who hate what I say. That's one of the things this site was founded on: free speech. I may have no tact and I may play devil's advocate from time to time but the point is, I am contributing whether you like it or not. That makes me part of the community and for better or worse I have stuck with you guys since 1998ish. I need to load a saved game. I need an extra life. I'd like my karma to be put back to at least what a new user would get. Is that so much to ask?

SUGGESTIONS TO ADMINS: Add some sort of easier way to make links. I'm not a HTML programmer. I'm a hardware geek. I'd give you a real button to push instead of making you open the box up and fiddle with the circuitry. Do the same for me please. Also this weird web 2.0 stuff just doesn't operate quite right especially on a smartphone (I use Opera). The constantly spinning "Working" thingy at the bottom of the page also doesn't convince me that the DB is doing anymore work than it used to. Mine's always working and it never loads anything else even when I want it to.

Comment I'm opposite (Score -1) 131

I know those people you speak of exist but I have the opposite problem. I have been TRYING to get some kind of tower, I'll even take a power windmill, to be put on my property. I live in the country so our land value is already shot by the numerous trailers around here (not that I care about land value) but to have a major corporation actually lease a parcel of my land would be a guaranteed check to pay my mortgage every month. I have yet to find who exactly to contact regarding this or have been given the run around but I guess the reason I am failing is I don't "know" the right people or have enough money. If any of you guys have been successful in this please let me know!

Comment Re:I tell ya why (Score -1) 247

You are correct. They are not stealing my electricity....yet. Do you remember when things like insurance were optional? There have been so many things that the goverment and business have tried out through the years that were optional or in trial testing and guess what? They didn't go away. We got stuck with them. So there will be a time when the power company will make remote controlled smart meters and grid tied inverters mandatory if you want any power at all. Then they'll just turn your a/c off when they want or a myriad of other things. There will be a day that if you want to go anywhere you'll have your gps tracked car auto drive you there- no option. Screw us who actually like to drive. Look at cellphones now. Originally using your phone as a gps was a neato feature that set different models apart, then it was legislated to be mandatory for "safety" and look now. Story after story of iphones and androids tracking you without consent. I also love the fact that I have a smart phone that somehow just won't work without that extra $30 data pack. I hardly believe that is a technical limitation. Cable companies forcing users to use their stupid receiver boxes....I could go on and on with examples of things that were originally just "optional" but then became mandatory. That's how they trick us into taking it in the ass without pissing us off. It's just one big game of "just the tip"

Comment I tell ya why (Score -1) 247

I've already told you twice as an AC (I was at work) but you evidently haven't read them or simply don't want to hear it. But I'll tell ya why again. We give them alot of money through grants and subsidies and it still isn't enough money for them. The other big problem is they are wearing our stuff out and leaving us with the cost to fix it. If they need our batteries to smooth out the power load then why don't they just buy some of their own batteries and make a UPS? Do you honestly believe that the power rebates (incentives) they will give you will equal the cost of a 5k-10k battery pack plus the mechanic labor of replacing it (not to mention lost time from work while it's at the shop)? Power cycling batteries dramatically reduces their lifespan. I made you a proposal as well. Let me come to your house and use your appliances, your power tools, and your electronics while you're at work. It's not like you are using them. I'll give you an incentive of $2 an hour just so you can get something out of the deal. Don't come bitching to me though if I wear them out or break them though, you got your $2. But yeah maybe you don't want me there for the whole 8 hours so you can set a limit of 50% and I'll just stay there for four hours. And just in that rare case you do come home early you can just kick me out when you need them so it's 100% "fully loaded". I somehow doubt though you're gonna buy the contract with my company. Do you STILL not see the problem here? I also have problems with several of the other proposed "green" technologies, namely the one one where they put the generators in the road beds and sidewalks and harvest energy from those. They are gonna use my car and my gas or electricity FOR FREE and then turn right back around and SELL it to me. And before you come back with "but it's such a miniscule amount, not even 0.01%, you'll never miss it," let's go to your bank and have them transfer 1 penny per day to ME for free. It's only 0.01% of a dollar. You'll never miss it. You lose more in couch cushions. See the fallacy in my argument?

One more time, here's a real world example that happened to me. When I was stationed in Okinawa Japan in the Army, I had a Toyota Supra that was a race vehicle. One night I wrecked it on the track but it wasn't that bad and I was repairing it little by little in my spare time. One day some military police decided my car was "abandoned" and they towed it off and threw it in the junk yard. The problem with this is in Japan you just don't throw cars away. You have to PAY the junkyard to "recycle" it. They took my car without my consent and then sent me a bill for approx $400. Not only that but some of the parts on my car were borrowed from a race buddy of mine. With vehicle title and registration in hand, I went to the junkyard to reclaim them and they refused to give them to me. I had to BUY back all the parts from MY OWN DAMNED CAR! Double dipping bastards! So what did I do with my daily driver when it came time for me to leave Okinawa? I literally took a plasma cutter and chopped it up into little pieces and threw the entire car, engine, tires, and all into a dumpster. I'll be damned if I let a corporation profit from me for free. They wouldn't let you or I profit from them for free.

You can call me a greedy bastard if you want but my kind of greedy isn't their kind of greedy. I just want my OWN property. The government and corporations want my stuff, your stuff, your mother's, brother's, EVERYBODY'S stuff and STILL want your money too! It's been happening so much lately (due to the bad economy which was their fault) that us poor little plebs are just sick and fucking tired of it. GET IT?

They serve their masters of course. Did you actually read the story or are you just spouting capitalist dogma? At first yeah the bots were just bossing humans around at fast food places and walmart type stores but if you did something the corporations didn't approve of you got blacklisted and became unemployable anywhere. Once that happened and you became poor and couldn't pay your debts you, for all intents and purposes, became property of the state. This divide into haves and havenots guaranteed that once you became a havenot you stayed a havenot and the robots that remained served the haves. So what if there are no customers at the restaurant? Well then the robot owners just closed the restaurants and repurposed the bots to watching the havenots for their own protection of course. The corps still got their money and the stayed in the have group. The story wasn't long enough to explore the logical conclusion that eventually everyone would end up havenots and then would revolt but really that wasn't the purpose of the story anyway. The point of the story was to show the two different extremes one could take to solve a problem or deal with a situation. I also believe it is a political statement that mean ol capitalism leads to a police state and somehow more social societies turn into utopia's but we could argue that for hours.

Comment Re:Got my vote (Score -1) 681

The airports don't get to choose shit. Most are government owned. You're thinking of the airlines and they don't necessarily get a say in airport security. So what you end up with is exactly what you have now with cable, ISP's, and cell phone companies. If they decide they want something to happen, they either get the gov to grant a local monopoly or they band together into a cartel and agree that they will all screw everyone over. So even though free market enthusiasts and experts will all say that things are all awesome now the government is NOT involved, the fact is the government is still right there standing behind them but now the corps are their masters. It shifts the balance of power from the consumer to the corporation. They get to LEGALLY force you to buy their stuff or just outright take your money (see phone "access" taxes). To believe that they will all become some kind of saints once they get free will is just not supported by historical evidence.

I would blame it on an inept congress and a broken economy but if you want to blame it on the robots, I won't argue that. But I am curious why the poster still hasn't come up off that company name. Either he doesn't constantly check his posts like a good slashdotter should (probably has a "real life") or his post was completly anecdotal and he's talking out his ass. I am an industrial automation technician and while there are a few jobs out there, in this crappy economy companies just don't want to spend the money on the bots. They'd rather outsouce. I've been outsourced too in the past. So, to stay relevent to the subject, I think every person with a job should worry about getting outsourced a thousand times before they worry about the robots taking over. The technology just isn't there yet and won't be by 2014, 15, or even 2030. A Rooba still can't vacuum the living room in any effective manner without getting stuck today and you want me to believe cars will be completly driverless in just 4 or 5 years? PREPOSTEROUS!
