eastbayted writes: Google gained ground in U.S. search market share in December and now holds a nearly 19 point lead over second-place search rival Yahoo, InfoWorld reports. Microsoft, meanwhile, lost half a point of search-market share and remains in third place with 10.5 percent, despite its efforts to refurbish and push Windows Live Search.

Neil H writes: "A little while ago I raised a petition to ban Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies on the new Number 10 petitions site. To date the petition has recieved 1,264 signatures, but the deadline (January 23rd) is fast approaching. As long as the petition gathers enough signatures all signees will recieve an email response, so if you live in the UK and dislike DRM please sign the petition!"

Submission + - UK MPs question barriers to open source in schools

munchola writes: Several UK Members of Parliament have signed an early day motion criticizing current government agencies for preventing the adoption of free and open source software in UK schools and universities. According to CBRonline: "The criticism of Becta is significant given that its three-year Memorandum of Understanding with Microsoft is scheduled to expire on December 31 this year. In January Becta announced that it was to review the impact of Microsoft's educational licensing programs in the UK, and consider alternatives. An interim report examining Microsoft licensing arrangements was supposed to be delivered in June with a second report, examining home and school computer use, due to be published in August. Neither report has seen the light of day, however."

Submission + - Microsoft hands over technical data to EU

hankwang writes: Reuters reports that Microsoft has handed over technical documents to the EU in order to enable the competition to make interoperable software. So far, the EU has imposed fines of €497 and €280 onto Microsoft for abuse of its monopoly. The deadline for this documentation was today. According to Microsoft, the documentation is over 8500 pages.
