Comment More Applications!! (Score 1) 1880

I would love to move to the Unix platform including Linux ( any and all distros ), BSD (openBSD, freeBSD, netBSD,
dragonflyBSD) , Solaris/Solaris-x86, AIX, HP-UX, Minix, etc....
These are the desktop applications that I use:
- SolidWorks ( 3D CAD program , a really expensive at that ) ,
- A real web browser: FireFox, Chrome, Safari, Chrome, ( yes, some are available on some unix platforms already , I know )
with full plug-in support for adobe flash,
- a real word processor that can go toe-to-toe with MS Word or WordPerfect,
- office suite that can also toe-to-toe with MS office, Apple iWorks,
- 2D Vector drawing program ( like Mac's Intaligio or Lineform ),
- 2D Raster drawing painting program like Corel Painter and Adobe PhotoShop.
- local native email client ( may or may not be as useful these days )
- CD/DVD player
- TV tuner ( DTV / HDTV )
- calendar / scheduler / project planner, to do , etc..
- new aggregator ( RSS reader )
- PDF reader,
- archive manager ( pkzip, arc, gzip, .tar, etc.. )
- anti-virus, firewall, malware protection, anti-spam, disk backup, disk partition,

or at least equivalent programs that can read and write the same data formats flawlessly.
none of that java platform apps. I want native apps on the Unix platform.
lightweight , no bloatware that is.

Submission + - Migrating from Mac to UNIX???

AIXmaster writes: Hi, I have an Apple Macintosh OS X ( 10.4 ) running on an old iBook G4. I'm thinking of migrating to
the UNIX/Linux/BSD platform. I have a bunch of apps and there are some apps that I would like to have. Such as:
Apple iWorks, M$ office, chmox, Google Earth, Intaglio, Lineform, BBedit, EyeTV, Safari, google chrome,
iDefrag, Disk Warrior, NetBarrier, Corel Painter, OmniFocus, OmniOutliner, OmniWeb, Circus Ponies notebook,
Adobe CS4 ( or later ), VectorWorks, SolidWorks, TurboCAD 3D, StuffIt, etc..

Are there any UNIX/Linux/BSD equivalents to the mac apps?
Better yet open source equivalent of them??
And be able to read/write the file formats as well?

For me, UNIX meaning OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Linux ( all distros ),
NetBSD, DragonflyBSD, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, Irix, MINIX, etc... I like to have options.. :>

Virtualization ( eg. vmware, virtualbox, xen, LPARs, etc ) means that I have to switch between
virtual machines or partitions and I have to sync data between them.
So using these apps within a single system image is preferable.

P.S. I have nothing against Steve Jobs. IMHO think that he have done a great job at Apple.
This is sort like an insurance policy in case if something happens to one platform or something..

Thanks..
